20 gauge slugs
« on: May 30, 2011, 10:29:06 AM »
Have 20 gauge pardner pump 20 inch barrel. Does anyone have experience with what slugs works best. Wanting groups of 6 inches or less at 100 yards? How high will it shoot at 50 yards if zeroed at 100 yards?

Gun shoots really well with Dixie Tri-Ball buckshot, Buckshot only has 3 pellets, patterns great at 40 yards about 3 inches, kicks hard try Dixie Slugs.com

You should try all slugs until you find the one your particular gun likes the best. I suggest 2 3/4" over 3" for accuracy. They are plenty for deer hunting, especially when placed correctly. Many here have luck with Remington Buckhammers. I like the old Brenneke's myself, the one made in Europe. The newer ones made in the USA don't seem to shoot as well in my guns. 6" groups at 100 yards is easily achieved, and bettered.
You are right on about Dixie Slugs, they are GREAT. I have been wanting to get and try some Tri-Ball myself.

In smoothbores, both bird and buck barrels, Ive had the best luck in this order (2 3/4 Foster type slugs):
WW
Federal
Rem
Yours may have different preferences.
BTW, even these cheap slug loads are serious kickers off a bench; I test them offhand 'cause Im a wimp.

My 20ga smoothbore shoots Remington sluggers and Winchesters the best.  Federals were not so good.  Can't find 20ga Brennekes around here, but Brennekes work great in my 12 ga smoothie.  Of course, every gun is different, and ya got to experiment to find out what it likes.
