3 barrel deal on consignment at local shop
« on: June 15, 2011, 04:13:34 PM »
A local shop has a Handi with a 50 S&W barrel on the rack.  It is a extractor.  The tag also listed a 45-70 and 7-08 barrels.  I didn't ask to see anything, just am thinking.  Does the 50 use the same foreend as the regular barrels?  It sure looked huge. I already have a .45-70, to me the 50 seems to be a duplicate of effort for more money.  What is the resale possibility of the .50; I already know the .45 is pretty popular.  I would like to have a 7.  The asking price is $300.  The other possibility is getting a second 7 on my frame, and then having duplicate guns for my grandsons when they get old enough.

A frame with a 7-08, 45-70 and 12 ga would cover anything they would hunt if and when the time comes.  Right now they are 2 1/2 and 3 1/2

Is the reciver and barrels new? I would try each barrel on the reciver and see if they fit tight or are they sloppy, if lose use that as a bargining chip, you can always sell/ trade the barrel or barrels for what you want. But you may get a lose barrel in trade but there not hard to fit,or you can sell them here and send reciver in and have one or more fitted by NEF. And make sure it a SB-2 frame and not a SB-1 for rifle cal.

Does the 50 use the same foreend as the regular barrels?

Yes, ALL H&R forends have the same forend channel(except some shotguns forends), they don't make forends for different barrel contours, they're one-size-fits-all.

Kenny,
Buy the set, it's a good price.  If you don't want the 45-70 barrel, I'll take it off your hands  ;D.  You could also sell the S&W 50 barrel, and almost get a 7mm-08 Handi for free.
I saw a similar set for $499.99 earlier this year and kicked myself for not buying it.  That was a  .357/.38Spec. barrel with a 4x Tasco scope, a .243 barrel with a 6x18 Tasco scope, and a.50 Cal Huntsman ML barrel.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I'd do it in a heartbeat, even though I already have Handis in those calibers.  In my situation, I'd sell all three barrels and virtually get my money back, and then I'd keep the frame and stock and buy a Handi barrel in a caliber I didn't have.

Check the last three digits of the serial number against the the number engraved in the lug.  If they match, it was factory fit.

Good luck,

Pete
