30-30 Improved loading
« on: May 31, 2011, 04:32:38 AM »
Have a 22" MGM 30-30AI barrel on the way for my Contender.
Who has real world loaddata they can share? Hoping to find a 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tip load for coyotes and antelope and a 150gr load for mulies and maybe hogs.
Also any real world experience with the Remington Bronze Point 150gr have couple hundred but have no experience with them.

I just had a 21" T/C Stainless Bull rechambered by MGM and it shoots great with fireforming loads. Shot it on Monday and it is great. I would not mind experiencing some good load data as well. Hope yours shoots as good as mine. Can't wait to shoot it some more!!

Work up to 2 grains over max with the slowest powder listed for the 30-30. Keep an eye on the chronograph and when you hit 200-250 fps the AI has done it's job..

The only load data I have was done up for Contender pistols.
My load that I use on WT deer is: WW case, Wolf LR primer, 33 grs IMR 4198, 125 Nosler ballistic tip, averages 2670 fps out of my MGM SS Shilen 14" barrel.

I have never seen the need for any other load for the hunting I do which is WT deer. I just got the barrel last summer and used it for the first time this past season. Shot 4 deer from 45 to 90 yards and dropped 3 in their tracks and one BIG BUCK took three jumps before he was down which was my fault because I hit him just a touch lower on the shoulder than I wanted to. All bullets exited after going through one or both shoulders.

The load data that I have list IMR 3031 with the best results with 150 gr bullets and the max was 36.5 grs depending on which bullet make used. Back off at least 2 grs and work up on this load. I found in my pistol when working up my 125 gr load that I reached max pressure 1/2 to 1 full grain before the listed max. My barrel has a nice tight chamber though.

I would recommend that you start out with Reloader #7 for the 125 grain BTs, I find it provides the best balance of accuracy and velocity with my 14 inch pistol barrel and frankly I think the 125's a better bet than the 150 for antelope and deer.   With 150 grain BTs I have found that IMR 4895 works best for velocity and accuracy.

I prefer Rl15 for the 150's and Ramshot biggame with the 170's and 748 for anything 150 and under.
