Winchester Model 55
« on: July 13, 2011, 10:51:19 AM »
Just for S&G here's a picture of the Winchester Model 55 22LR I had until a few years ago that was kind of an oddity.   They are a top loading semi auto single shot with bottom eject, great adjustable sights in a full size rifle with a nice walnut stock.   This one was mint, very well made and very accurate.   They didn't have serial numbers.   About 45K of them were made between 1958-1961.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

that's a new one on me, but very interesting.  winchester made some good rimfire barrels back then so I'm sure it was a good one.

My cousin had one of those back when we were in high school. Knowing him he prolly still has it. That thing patterned rat shot like a shotgun delivering the best shot patterns I've ever seen from a rifled barrel. It also shot very accurately with bullets. Nice little single shot rifles.

A semi-automatic single shot? I've never heard of one before...

Probably should have included above it has a reloading gate like a lever gun, but on top of the barrel a ways behind the barrel band.   You can see it in the bottom picture.   It was black plastic, but heavy duty for years of use.   Just drop a round in it, pull the bolt lever, take it off safe and fire away all day to your hearts content.

I assumed they were intended as starter rifles for kids even though a full sized rifle... in part because of the single shot and in part because besides ejecting after the shot it also reengaged the safety automatically.

Never tried shot in it Bill, always have some on hand, but I never even thought of it.   But it sure was a fun, light gun to pop tree squirrels for dinner and jumpshoot jackrabbits with.   I think it was unfired or all but unfired when I got it in a trade.   Kind of wish I hadn't sold it even though the only rimfires I've shot since 2002 are the 17's.   Gent who bought it sure was tickled to find one in mint condition though as it brought back his childhood when he had one.  So it went to a good home at least.
