Question on pro hunter 223 barrel and max bullet weight?
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:43:07 PM »
Every once in a while I get urge to talk myself into another encore barrel.  The one that seems to tempt me the most lately has been the idea of a stainless prohunter in 223.  I enjoy long range target shooting and I'd be looking to use the heaviest bullets I could get away with in the 223 to get the extra range.  I know the 223 bullets go up to 90gr, but they need a 1 in 7 twist.  Unless I'm wrong the pro hunter 223 has a 1 in 12" twist so I'd be lucky to get 69gr bullets shooting well out of it.

Anyone here using an encore pro hunter 223 for long range kinda like what I'm talking about? I'm not talking about shooting for competitions, I just like grinning after hitting the steel at 800 yards.

I have not used the pro hunter 223 barrel but have used a TCR 223 1-12 twist and it will not handle anything over 55 grns. the bullet tail drags and is not quite a true keyhole. I have a Mossberg SSi 1 with a 1-9 twist and I have shot 70 grn in it with no problem perfect hole. If you reload you might be able to work up something that it will shoot in the heavier bullets. If you are set on the heavier bullets you might get MGM or one of the custom barrel makers to make you a barrel with a different twist.

Thanks for the help guys.  That's the news I was afraid of, but I appreciate you guys being honest about it.  I was really thinking it'd be a sweet setup with the longer heavier bullets because I wouldn't have to worry about fitting it into a magazine with a single shot.  Oh well, TC just lost some business over that one.

Go a custom barrel and you can have whatever you want... 9 twist for up to 70's, 7 or 8 twist for heavier.   Sometimes you just have to bite the "bullet" to build your ideal TC.   But the payoffs are there and worth the extra few bucks.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I know what you're saying and I was hoping it'd work out, but if a barrel is going to cost me almost as much as my next best option, then I'm going to go with my next best option.  In this case I know I can get out to 800 yards with a factory heavy barreled savage with a 1 in 9" twist using 69gr matchkings.  I was just hoping that I could use the longer 28" barrel of the prohunter's to reach out just a little more, but I don't think it's going to work out.   :(

I have T/C rifle barrels in 222, 223 & 22-250 and they all shoot very well with Speer 70 gr. Semi-Spitzers.

I have used 60 grain Nosler Partitions and 60 grain Hornady Spire Points in my T/C Encore 24" factory 223 Remington rifle barrel which both are very accurate.

I may be wrong but I believe it has more to do with bullet length than bullet, according to what I've read you can go up to 65gr.flat based bullet. That being said in my encore I've never tried anything heavier than 55gr.,the heavier stuff I shoot thru my AR.
XLI the one to go with.

Ideally I'd like to use sierra 69gr bullets but they need a 1-9 twist minimum.
