Longer barrel for 45 Colt?
« on: May 04, 2011, 02:31:18 AM »
Looked throught the FAQs and tried a search, sorry if I missed the obvious.

The only barrel length I see available for the 45 Colt is 20".  Does anyone offer a longer barrel, maybe even a 32" like the 45-70?

Thanks, Matt.

Sorry no Matt. It's only available in the 20" barrel.

Considering it is a pistol cartridge it probably performs best with the 'carbine' length barrel. FWIW, I have the 28" 38-55 and like that length over the 32" 45-70, and my 45-70 is the newer SS UH in 24" which balances nicely. Obviously Im not one of the 'shorty camp'.
If you get a 45-70 you have the choice of 22, 24 and 32", or bob one to what you want. You can load 300gr bullets which some load in the 45Colt's (SAME GRAIN WEIGHT, DIFFERENT DIA.) and load it on up to the big 'airships' too.
It seems hard to find a bad load for the 45-70.

We're talking a pistol caliber here.  A 20 inch carbine barrel is three times the length of a pistol barrel.  What would you want a 28 inch barrel for??  I doubt you'd gain anything but bulk and weight.  My 22 inch .445 is soon coming to 18 inches to match my .38-55.  My BC carbine is staying at 20 inches....at least for now.  My shortie is the .357 Maxi at 16.5 inches, and it is a shooter.  We're not shooting light bullets at over 3000 fps.  For the most part, we're shooting big fat ones under 2000 fps.

Bulk and weight were exactly what I was looking for actually.

Thanks for the replies, Matt.

I like my BC the way it is, but would like it better if it looked more like a rifle. My 45-70 is the 22" kind because I could not afford a longer Buffalo Classic. I have had several pairs of milsurps with a carbine and a rifle in the same caliber, always prefer the rifle. My .58 Hawken only has a 34" barrel, but that's BP.
A 45 LC in about a 28-30" would be nice, I'm thinking.

I have a 24" 38 Special Contender bbl using HS7 am getting almost 1600 FPS with a 125gr RP GS and havent even tried 2400 or H110. Also the longer the barrel the quieter the light loads are. Going from  20" to 24" barrel a load of 7.4 grs HS7 in 38 loses 20-30FPS but the noise level is reduced so much, that it sounds like a 22CB compared to a 22LR subsonic. You can pop your legal limit of small game and not walk home with ringing ears.  Its really too bad the 45 Colt and 45/70 dont have the same bore diameter because it would simplify the bullet situation.

I would love to have a 32" 45 colt Buffalo Classic.  I only shoot my 45-70 at 100 most of the time and a 45 colt would be more than enough and easier to reload for (carbide dies).  I think it would be a fun offhand gun for 100 yards.

Geez guys, I dont even resize my 45-70s, just decap, recap, charge and stick a new pan lubed cast bullet in the mouth. It just dont get any easier...... ;)

I sorta thought that, when you fired a case in a chamber, that sized it for that chamber. ;D

The other nice thing is shooting 200 grain ftx bullets for plinking instead of something heavier, that pan lubing bullets sounds like more work than sizing.

You can 'tumble lube' with Lee Liquid ALOX quick & easy.
Pan lubing amounts to heating my pie pan c/w enough homemade lube in it to cover the top grease groove, over a low heat source (dont want it to smoke or burn!). Set the bullets in and let cool, then thumb push them out of the 'block' of lube (which releases nice out of the tapered pie pan sides. You can buy one at St-Vincents or Goodwill for cheap.
This way I can use as cast size bullets without buying a new (expensive) sizing die and nosepunch for the Lyman 450 Lubrisizer.
I baggie the pan & lube when done to keep it clean.
Next go-round I set bullets into the punch out holes and carefully heat until lube melts and flows into the grease grovves, off the heat and go away to do something else or stick it in the fridge to harden (but moving it is about the time I fumble, so I tend to just leave it).
BTW, you may want to do this outside or in the garage, it can really stink up a kitchen/house (dont ask).

At 32" I'd suspect the bullet would start slowing down in the barrel due to drag/friction and not enough pressure behind the bullet.   ...probably starting at much less lengths.
