Gas Prices.....
« on: May 02, 2011, 04:58:05 AM »
I didn't want to steal the other thread...

How are you going to handle it this trapping season with high gas prices?

1-I'm buying supplies now before everything goes up again.
2-I'm even setting the second choice locations in stead of just the hot spots. This way I'll get more traps per mile.
3-trapping coons(I don't trap coon) and sell on the round to offset cost.

Sounds like a plan.

I'll trap on the way to work and make some of my gear from scrounged materials instead of buying. I'll walk more of my line. Who couldn't use the exercise?

RZ,
I had just made 4 good size muskrat floats and 2 beaver floats out of scrap materials that I aquired for free from various locations. That helped me out extremely since I got laid off last Feb.

I always separated land and water trapping.I either trap one or the other.I'm going to mix it this year.I'm just worried on contamination of my land gear.I'm real fussy on land gear, but the total apposite on water trapping.Go figure!!!

I hate to say it but I think the people in charge of the gas jack the price up past what they want for an increase. Then when everyone starts screaming they back it off to where they originally wanted. Make us think their giving us some kind of deal instead of just saying their going to increase the price. Seems to be pretty much the pattern now for many years. Every other product out their seems to do what they can to hold price to what people can afford. Gas they just start jacking it up till everyone screams then they go a bit more.
Ok I got that out of my system, it is good to see it going back down. My wife says it has dropped 30 cents here in the last week. I try not to look at it because it just upsets me and I can't do nothing about it.

Ok last post I missed on the actual topic.
Id like to try to fill some gaps in my line. Over the years I've had farms change hands and lost some of my trapping properties and shuffled my line. I'd like to look at the plate book and map closer and see if I can add a farm or two in the big gaps. Tighen up things so I'm not driving as far between farms. I think seen as my target last several seasons has been mainly coon I should be able to do this.   I'll keep the farms at the beginnning of my line and the ones at the end. Add in between where I can, then just trap it the best I can. With the road system we have here in WI I can jump into my line at several different points. So set hard at the beginning and as that part slows move the traps down the line. It's really what I've always done it's just that I've gotton lazy about filling the gaps that have developed.
