700/Mod 7 question
« on: April 04, 2011, 07:16:58 AM »
Could anyone tell me if the standard caliber actions and recoil lugs on the 700/7 are the same dimensions as the magnum calibers? And do all Mod 7s use the small diameter rear action screw or was there a change/caliber difference.
I ask because I just got a used synthetic stock for my Mod 7 and the rear action screw hole is the larger diameter [same as the front] and the recoil lug recess has more play, front to rear, than my old wood stock, or is that just the way the plastic stock are made?
Thanks

Without pulling actions from stocks (something I'm not willing to do tonight) I can say that the recoil lugs as seen from the top with action in stock appear the same thickness on original model sevens, newer M7 Predator and all my M700s to include the only belted magnum I own a .257 Whby mag.

Now if I were to pull the action there might be a differents below.

The original M7 7-08 with 18.5" barrel appears to have the same head size on rear screw but it's a flat head screw and the newer M7s have an allen head screw. My tools aren't handy so I didn't take either screw out. I think I recall however that the body (threaded part) of the older Model Sevens have a larger screw size than the Predators I have but it's been awhile since I've pulled either from the stock.

Thanks for your reply, and no need going and doing something silly like pulling actions on my account. All my rifles are non-mag calibers so I had nothing to compare them to.
