Dicks Sporting Goods - No More Handi's
« on: March 20, 2011, 02:21:09 PM »
went into dicks looking for handi's and they had one of the .223s heavy barrel camo stock scope combos and i asked if they got any .308's and he said no because corporate was in the process of dropping handi rifles from regular stock due to low sales, they will now only be available by special order... this disappoints me because they are one of the only big box stores left to stock handi's

If they drop them because of low sales, maybe they need to promote their product line better.
No way will the sales increase without product, duh!

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Dick’s stop selling firearms all together and evolve into a Yuppie Outfitter’s store, they’re almost there now.

Last time I was in a Dick’s Sporting Goods, they had a price tag of $40 on a box of Federal Bulk pack .22 LR ammo. Same box at the Wal-Mart across the street is $19.

That was the last time, and I do mean the last time.

I was in the local DSG last week.No Handi's there at all either.I went to look at a Simmons 2x7 shot gun scope.Didn't have one in stock.Did get a Nikon prostaff 2x7x32 for $101 OTD.Just a few buck more than the Simmons and a much better scope.Had to wheel and deal, but got it for 25% off the sticker w/no box or paper work.I just went to Nikon's site and registered the warranty on line.Put it on my new to me BC 45-70.If the wind hadn't been blowing 30+ all day,i'd have seen how good it was.

I bought one and only one gun from Dicks.  It took almost 2 hours to complete the FFL paperworks, not because of the background check, but because the people working at this store had not been trained in the procedure to sell a longgun.  They had to be talked through the paperwork by someone from another store.  The price was good so I waited but it will never happen again.

The Handi's are starting to cost too much. The price gap between an entry level bolt gun is really close. Dicks is the first of many just wait and see. The Single Shot is a niche market and as such only devoted enthusiasts are are going to pay the money. It used to be that a Handi was a real bargain not so much now in the average consumers eyes. I was at dicks today checking the clearance handis, and bought two. but it took forever to get out of the place, I dread going back to pick them up. It was the salesmans boring blabber about the real nice guns he shoots, not the low quality h&r that I was buying, So sales are low because they talk some people out of buying them maybe.

Nothing I hate more than knowing 10x more about guns than the "guru" behind the counter who would have you think he was John Moses Browning's great grandson.  Except maybe someone looking down their nose at you cause you shoot a handi.

I haven't seen a Handi in a Dick's around us (Maryland) since Christmas. I went in last month to buy a camo stocked .223, was advised that they were out, wouldn't be anymore and they had no way to find out what stores still had them. That's about the only thing I've seen at a Dick's store that I couldn't get anywhere else. Guess there's no need to go back.

Our local Dick's has the sum total of 100 sq ft dedicated to all things The rest of the place is full of golf, hiking, and sportswear.  An absolute waste of my time to even open the doors.

In Greenville, Ky, however, there is a hardware store that carries a full line of Handi's and many other fire arms and actually has a knowledgeable sales staff for the gun and reloading counter ;D

keep em talkin' while I reload

I was at Dicks a month back and picked up the 223 camo'd, scoped heavy barrel 24" model for a decent price.
The guy behind the counter knew how to do the ffl stuff and phone in background, but it took some time as a major gunshow was in down and loaded the background resources.

Back to the store guy....
He was much younger than me, went thru the first Navy sniper school in 1989, had worked for Winchester building model 70 sniper guns (he was his navy unit's amouror also), regularly shoots in a 600 to 1000 yd paper and steel shooting group and swears by a 170gr solid bronze bullet design that you cant buy from A-Square any longer. He figured out that he can buy bronze stock from a local high end machine tool steel vendor, turned to his spec'd diameter and then runs them on his own lathe in his garage for shape.

Really impressed me, right up to the time this guy walks up and pee's on the barn wall a tad higher.
He shoots a 460 weatherby and consisitantly shoots 5 shoot groups under 2 inches at 200 yards.

Deer and Elk fear him, Women want him and I want to be him!

Wow.
These handi's....ONE well placed shot is all you need and repeatability!

I keep reading about these 'deals' at Dick's, but the one near me has been nothing but a consistent disappointment.

Our local Dick's had two or three last time I was in. Getting a salesperson to actually be in the gun dept to help you is well..... another story.

A lot of people don't want a single shot though, the big thing today is to make your guns either all black or tactical. And turn it into either an assault rifle copy or a sniper rifle.

Not knocking people enjoying the sport, but there is a lot more shooters than there are hunters now, and I think the Handi is a rugged field gun, but not very appealing to someone that wants to bench shoot 100% of the time.

I love a nice light single shot rifle for hunting (Handi).

I have bolt actions for precision target shooting.

I have AR's for playing and SHTF.

They are all tools and have a certain purpose, IMHO.

They are probably dropping the Handi's in favor of the Rossi's they sell.  To the general public they are same same, but the Rossi is half the price of the Handi...........wonder why they are dropping the Handi?  I got a 22/410 combo for under a Hundred dollars out the door at Dicks, it all about money and profit.  H&R needs to get it together and compete or die.  Larry
