.44 mag handloads for the Handi ?
« on: March 20, 2011, 06:45:58 PM »
Could some of you that reload and shoot the handi in .44mag, give me some advice?

What I would like know is what powder and primer combination  to use , Seeing that with a rifle
is closed breech and revolver is open breech. So I'am not sure whether to use H-110 or a faster
powder.

Your advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,
jr 1968

Start with your "pet" load for a revolver and you'll likely get a group (or pattern) that looks something like the first picture ::).  That'll do for 30 yards and barn doors.  Now look at the second pic  :) powder was 2400 with Federal non-magnum large pistol primers (150)

;D that's what worked for me, yours may have other desires

jr1968- I love the 44 mag and have had one since 1969. I have/had 2 Ruger Super Blackhawks, a Win M94, a Ruger 44 Carbine and a S&W M296.5".  I have reloaded since 1970 and have found no powders better Than H110 or W296(basically same powder).  I have loaded mostly Sierra 180/240 JHCs, some Speer 200 JHPs and some cast 215 LGCs and lead Kieth 245 SWCs.  Between my wife and I we have taken 8 deer with 44s-her best was a 100BC 6pt. Mine were al revolver harvests. I have loaded 2400 and Unique, while being accurate, they were filthy compared to the ball powders H110/296.  My best 100 yds group was w/ a Ruger SBH/H110/245Keith245SWC/lead load when my Ruger shot a tighter 100 yd 5 rd group than my cop/wannabe neighbor shot with his Winchester M70 ,308 w/ 4X scope!  All my loads are from a Speer #8 Manual or a Sierra Manual from the same era.

I have loaded in my 44 Handi the Cast Performance 320 grain WLNGC  and the 300 grain Speer PSP bullets. Both using safe charges of H110 and a large magnum pistol primer. Both of these bullets are tough as nails and will penetrate beyond description.

That looks like the groups 3 different 44's shoot with 2400 and 240 gr. Hornady XTP's!  Haven't found a reason to try anything else yet!   ;)

2400 + XTPs are the food for my 44's.  Have been for 15 yrs.

It was a healthy does of 296 that fired the pattern in the first pic.  296 and cast bullets are what my super redhawk likes, but the handi had to be different.  I am also going to try a load in the Handi using IMR 3031 (hey they published it for a reason)

Keith,

I have had great luck with I3031 and 44 cal. bullets in a 22" Handi.  Oregon Trail 310 LWNGC, 0.430", over a compressed load is very accurate.  Note, this is in the 44 Maximum (aka 444M). ;D  I have also used the same powder/bullet combination in fully rifled 410 slug gun (gun has .43" bore).  Powder charge is reduced about 12% from the 444M because of reduced case volume of the plastic/brass 410 hull.  Same accuracy, just less velocity.  I would expect good results from the 44 Mag with this powder/bullet.

I can't argue with that one.  Below is a pic of my last shot sighting in with it under a 240 gr. XTP.
