Brother currently has a bolt action 280 IMP, but he had a 742 in 280 Remington at one time. His 280 JamMaster caused him a lot of headaches and he traded it off. Was it the rifle, was it the ammunition, or a little of both? As a Marine who started out with the M14, and graduated to the AR in the teething years he was less then happy. He lost money on the deal.

BTW The jamming is not incurable if it comes down to it. I have a 742 in 30-06 that never jammed on me so far.

I also have a 742 in 30/06 that has never jammed or been a problem. Keep it CLEAN though. I've never ran across a 7400 or a 742 in 280, so I'd probably buy it. It's a great caliber.

well now ? i bought it...
took home cleaned it really well, got gas port clean, recoil spring lubed , bolt face squeeky clean{tooth brush}, locking lugs still haves blueing on them,
bore snake and dry patches,
shot just fine !!!
no jams at all.
1st two shots touched, 3rd openend up to 3/4. thats at 60 yards, iron sights.
altho ? cleaning the chamber was kinda a pain, bristel brush, and solvent. did the best i could....
thinks she be just fine.

.280 is a great caliber esp if you hand load. You can approach 7mag performance. The .280 will best the 270 whith heavy bullets and the 30-06 with lite bullets. The 7mm caliber also has a greater bullet selection than the 270. I have a Rem 700 in 280 and my son has a 7600 in 280. It doesn't surprise me the 3rd shot flew, the lite barrel has a tendancy to heat up quickly. Great fast handling gun. Should be accurate out to 40yrds no problem. I nice Leupold in 2x7 would be my next purchase unless this is a stricy brush gun.

I know people that say they're not accurate, I had one that shot 1'' at 100yds. I know people that say they jam. I asked them if they keep the chambers clean and they say YES, I clean the barrel and I say NO, I mean do you keep the chamber clean with a brush. Some look puzzled. I never had a problem but kept chamber clean and didn't use only a dab of oil.

ok,got a chamber brush at warsaw gunshop, and scrubbed it good, with solvent, and break free CLP, and another 3 passes with bore snake.. looking down bore and chamber, , VERY clean now !!!!
getting scope putt on in next week or so.

I got one of those bore snake contraption in 30 cal. I consider it a field cleaning item only. It is amazing what comes out of a barrel once you get the old fashioned rod and patch/brush drill done that the snake never touched.
I get a bit paranoid cleaning a rifle that can't be done from the breech forward so I run the rod down from the muzzle and then attach the brush or patch once the rod end is visible in the magazine well.* Slow work, but I don't push "stuff into the chamber or on the trigger assembly.

For the 760 or 7600
The 742 etc needs to have the operationg handle tied back or an empty magazine in place.

They make a chamber brush with the bend in it for the 7400& 7600 IN fact ,My gun came with it.

OOOOPS

400yrds. The only thing wrong with the 7400 is the trigger. Dang thing is shotgun trigger. That can be fixed and you'll have a fair #4 trigger after repair.

in 280 you will lose the ability to load to its full potential because of the mag. however..kept clean ( a little more time and effort than required with a bolt) use small base dies and it will more than likely function just fine and take anything up to Elk just fine.

If you decide to give it away you will not have to run to give to me I will run to you...lol

You know that small base die thing has me $:-\$ for some time now. I do have one and use it on all of the reloads for the three 06'es I got. One of which is a bolt action.
My thinking is this, if the round sized with a normal type die does chamber and lock up properly into a 742 or similar why do I need a small base die?? After all the brass will expand in the Chamber anyway to whatever dimensions are there and it should have nothing to do with the extraction. For those of you that had jams, was it when the rifle didn't eject? You can't fix that with a small base die IMO.
Anything wrong here with my thinking. !?

Well now....... its been awhile..traded the. 280 off.... i wish i had not of done that... she was a good shooter.
Still have the 30-06 7400 . My late wifes rifle.
Anyhoo...... traded into a coupla savages..... a american classic in 250-000 and a 1951 savage 99 in 250-000...
Bact to the 7400 .....
hated the trigger.it shoots really good...but i feel it would shoot even better with a good trigger.
so.long story now is---—- i sent trigger group off to accurcysystems for their 3.5 two stage match trigger.
Othe than the trigger. I really like this old rifle. Shoots soft..,hits hard....mine love the 150 grain core-locks.

Silly phonee too small for my fingers.
still working with the 7400 .. love how soft it shoots.
accuracy systems says send in your trigger group..youll be amazed with your trigger.
i sure hopes so.... sent mine in ...80 bucks for a two stage 3.5 trigger and overtravel adjustment.
Kinda spendy. But? Should make the rifle a soft shooting dream.. i hate recoil. Thats why i love the remington 7400.

Ive been blessed ... my late wifes '06. Just keeps on ticking.
i think she bought in the mid 80's ....itll shoot inch groups at 100. With remington core locks. 150 grainers.
And because its the only thing of hers that she wanted me to have.

The 280 was a sweet rifle...kicking my self for trading it.... but? I really like this 99 !!!
Im thinking? Might get a 7600 pump in. 280 ...or. 243....√ ?

Heck i enjoy all the rifles ive had.
