Gonna get my thumper tomorrow
« on: March 05, 2011, 12:24:05 PM »
Went to the gun show here today.Found a BC 45/70.A buddy of mine has it at his table.I'll pick it up in the morning.Ran out of funds so he's holding it for me.No inserts, but has areal nice leather sling with butt pad on it.Time to dust the dies off and load some 4198.Used to load 45-70 in a Marlin and T/c 14".Hope my shoulder is still up for it.

Slow,

Nice find & enjoy your new rifle!  BTW, there is a new law in Handiland that requires all 45/70 BCs to be reamed to 45-120. ;D :o

Oh I know. Not new to the 45-70.Had three of them.Marlin lever,T/C 14" muzzle tamed and a ruger #1.Hated that one and sold it.Traded the others several years ago.Killed several deer with the T/C and Marlin. If I remember I loaded 47 grains of IMR 4198 under a 350 gr.JSP.Shot a lot of lead too.405 and 500 grainers.Still have the dies, but need to get boolits and cases.Fun guns, but didn't have enough sense to down load for plinking.Won't make that mistake this time.Pictures will follow when I get it home in the morning.

I bought my 45-70 Handi when Mississippi legalized them as a primitive weapon.  I now have a .35 Whelen and a .357 Max, both of which are also legal for PW season.  The 45-70 is still my favorite.  It kills deer really dead every time.  I've actually got two 45-70's.  The other one is a Ruger No1 and out of the five No1's I own, it's my favorite.  Just a great old cartridge.

Well got it home and cleaned it up.If my head didn't hurt so bad(sinus)I'd go around the corner and try it out.The recoil might clean my sinus's out ;D Got the leather lace on sling and a box minus two 325 gr.XTF Hornady.Probably have to wait until next week to try it.

Need to get mine tuned up with the new 'glass on it, a "vintage" K4-60B Weaver 4x,AND the new to me Marlin Cowboy 45-70.  Would be nice to have a common load that both will shoot, but not all will function through the Marlin...........
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline
