Forend fit to frame questions.
« on: March 04, 2011, 05:29:43 AM »
After doing some work on a forend I think I've solved or will solve a very bad forend to frame fit. It lines up fairly well now. However when the forend is mounted to the barrel you can grab a hold of the forend and with moderate pressure slightly twist the forend. The movement is not a lot. Interestingly enough there is no movement when the breech is open, only when closed. I guess you could say it's free floated ever so slightly at the frame. There is no gap at the frame/spacer at all, just fits loose enough to allow some slight movement. See any problems with this? I suppose it could help accuracy as there is no hard contact at the frame.

I prefer the forend not touch the frame, that was one goal in using a hanger bar to mount the forend to, I can run a piece of paper between frame and forend using the hanger.  You can epoxy bed the enlarged hole you made for the off center forend stud that would solve the looseness, just use a good release agent so it's not permanently mounted!  :o ::) ;D

I like a snug even but not too tight fit. Hard to describe it's a " just rite" feel.  Try some thin spacers under the plastic trim.

Strips of tape that just fit between the screws (of the spacer and forearm wood) let you 'stack' them to get just the right fit. Once there you can measure the stack and find a shim material to cut to fit. Some use 'furnace duct metallic tape' ,NOT common 'duct tape', but Ive cut plastic and even cereal box cardboard (which I painted black and spayed with a clear coat).

Quickdtoo, I see you must of been there at some point too! You are right I slightly enlarged the hole, I also sanded out the barrel channel a bit as well.
