target loads in a FA model 83 with 454 Casull brass?
« on: May 20, 2011, 01:47:01 PM »
Any body else using target loads in a FA model 83 with 454 Casull brass?

I figure trail boss powder would work real good.

How is it working out for you?

My normal 454 Casull load is 8gr of Bullseye under a 250gr Hornady XTP.  This should run right about 1,000 fps in a 7.5" barrel, but I have no chronograph to measure it.  My Model 83 came with a 454 Casull load sheet that list quite a few loads from .45 Colt level, all the way to 240gr bullets at over 2,000 fps.  I have also tried 265gr Cast Performance cast bullets over 13 and 14gr of Unique, this load generates about the same energy as a .44 Magnum.  The .454 Casull is a very versatile caliber.  I bought the .45 Colt cylinder with mine, but never use it, as I can do anything I want in 454 Casull brass.  If you load down, you will more than likely need a taller front sight blade, I did.  Otherwise your shots will hit pretty high, even with the rear sight adjusted all the way down.  I don't find full power 454's to be that fun to shoot, but the revolver is quite nice to shoot at lower power levels.  My next project for this revolver is the Lyman 452424 255gr Keith bullet at 1,200fps or so.

I'm just the opposite. I've never used my 454 cylinder as I can do anything I want with 45 brass. I like TB. My favorite plinking load is a 400gr bullet over 3 grains of TB. It's a hoot to shoot, but still packs a mean punch. I sure wouldn't want to get hit with it. I can't see a problem using TB in the 454 case. You can really load it down but not too low if your gun is ported or you might have to pound the bullet from the barrel.....easy to do if you're shooting lead   ;)  I'm also fond of 4227. It's a little dirty, but shoots so nice.

You can use 45 ACP data in 454 brass, but you will have to seat the bullet flush with the case mouth, like a 38 Wadcutter. I don't resize the brass for this, just prime, charge, seat, and then run the round partially in the sizer die to crimp the case walls just ahead of the bullet.

just got some great loads worked up with titegroup, also hs6, though the twist on most 454's is gonna give greater accuracy at higher velocities if you do your part.
a gun owner that votes dem is an oxymoron with the emphasis on moron.

One of my all time favorites in 454 brass is a 255 cast over a charge of 11 grains of 231 or HP38.  Shoots VERY tiny groups and does about 1150 fps from a 7.5" Freedom.  GS

try 8.0 to 11.0 grs of tight group with 260 + gr cast bullets the 8.0 load is approx 980 fps. thats the lowest i went and accuracy is excellent !
