Do the impregnated hardwood grips have more 'grip' than micarta?
« on: February 23, 2011, 02:21:46 PM »
Thinking of sending my 4 1/4" model 97 .357 to Wyoming for a few upgrades.
Cylinder fluting, 5 1/2" barrel, trigger job.
Mine came with the black Micarta grips and they have always been a little slippery to me, not to mention less than traditional looking.
The wine wood grips would look great with the stainless, and if they are less slippery, that might be enough to justify the expense.
Thanks.

I've noticed a little skin left on Winewood's and have not on Micarta's, so I guess the Winewood has a little more bite.

Not to me...I've never seen a difference in "gripability", across a number of examples of each.

I've always felt that the contour of the winewood grips was different than that of the micartas with the micartas being slightly "fuller" (at least on the ones I have).   Very dry (winter) and wet/sweaty (summer) hands cause "gripability" problems for me with both grip materials.  If it becomes an issue, I use either a very thin golf glove, or rub a little bow string wax on my hands (like waxing a surf board or skis).

With that said, I very slightly favor the winewoods for feel.  This will vary from gun to gun and person to person, so your mileage may vary.
