Once Upon A Time.....
« on: February 13, 2011, 01:49:04 AM »
In 2005 you could order Handi-Rifles from Walmart by just printing out the online order page and presenting it to the clerk at the gun counter. I came across some Walmart printouts I had from 2005 and was surprised by the prices. In January 2005 you could get a pallet wood Handi for $187, synthetic Handi for $195, rifle caliber Survivor for $196, 410/45Colt Survivor for $140, Synthetic S.S. Handi for $239, Ultra Rifle for $230, Tracker for $126, Ultra DLX Slug for $217 and a Sportster for $103.

Everything has gone up!

Just a couple of years ago you could build a rifle on the cheap, but have you looked at the prices of used barrels lately?

Not complaining just stating facts because it is what it is, and with FFL fees going up, I now look only to buying new as I have on my last Handi with deals still to be had.

Throw in the panic buying of the past and the uncertainty of the future, those good ole days are just that!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Back about the time My son was born (he just turned 18) Fays drugs got bought out by Eckards. The Fays here had a pretty substantial sporting goods dept. Shot guns, rifles, ammunition, a huge fishing section. Well Eckards did away with that. I bought a Tracker II 12ga on clearance for $100. I then bought every box of CCI stingers 22lr they had for .99 cents a box. I'm still shooting that stuff.

Years ago i worked a gun show booth with one of my dads friends, around 1988-89. On the Sunday he gave me a hundred dollar bill, I bought an M1 Carbine for 90$ and 2 extra mags for 10$. They could be bought all day for those prices!  I traded that gun off for who knows what. I went to a gun show the other day and those same old rifles were anywhere from 300 on up!  I kick myself everytime I see one!

When I was 15 or 16  so it was 1977 or 1978 we were in sears at a mall and they had an M1 carbine I think it was $89 sales clerk just unlocked the gun case handed it to me and we walked up to check out and paid for it.

I bought an M 375 Marlin NIB at a gun show a year ago.  Still had the price tag on it from 1980, $149.99, from JC Penny!  Those days are long gone sadly.  DP

Yeah I know so looking back on it now I'll bet those clerks took some heat for that. They probably hadn't been well trained.

I bought my 223 ultra for $240 special order from walmart in 2006.  I wish those were the same prices now, i would probably buy another.  just wait and see what happens to mosin nagants.  When i bought my m44 they were $69 and now they just cant be had for a decent price if you can find them.  On the other hand I paid a ton of money for my colt 6920 a few years ago and now they are much cheaper.  Due to gun prices i havent bought one in well over a year it just seems almost silly to pay new prices for them.

It's all water over the dam.  I should have bought a hundred each '03 Springfields and .30-40 Kraigs when they were 25 bucks each in the back of Field and Stream.  I think gun prices will continue to rise and we'll make money on what we have if we want to.
