Tang or Receiver mounter peep?
« on: January 02, 2004, 01:38:07 PM »
I'd like to replace  the sights on my post '64 Winchester model 94 top eject.

The Marble's and Lyman tang sights look like the would be great at the range.   However it looks like they would be in the way I'm carrying my rifle.

I'm thinking a receiver mounted peep would be more practical for hunting.  The William's fire sight peep set looks like a good candidate to me.  I've heard the William's fool proof mentioned but  can't find a picture of one.

Anyone have any experience with any of these sights?

I've owned various kinds of receiver and tang sights. I think the receiver sights are the best all around. Tang sights are great for single shots, but they're not as rugged and are usually down for carry and need to be flipped up. I would recomend the Lyman 66LA, it's basically the same as the Williams 5D exept that it's steel, not cast aluminum. You would have to get your rifle drilled and tapped on the left side of your receiver for either of them (I think it's the same holes for either). Midway USA has pictures.

Then add a fiber optic front bead

:D  I have had some experience with both tang and receiver mounted sights. By my reckoning, the receiver sights are the way to go for hunting use. Target acquisition is much faster and easier, too. Tang sights are great if you are using a steady rest and have your target immobile. This doesn't happen often in the fields and forests, either. The choice is yours; go with what you like. You are getting good advice above, I agree completely, tang on the range to impress folks and receiver for hunting and the like.

you'll be much happier with either over the buckhorns!

I would say receiver.  I think I have heard of some taking a tang sight in the eye if you are not careful and depending what caliber it is on.

Thanks for the tip on the Lyman being all steel.  I definitely will choose that  over the Willams.

How about the front sight?  I think I would like a green pin sight.  I really don't like red fiber optic in low light.  I would like to keep it pretty small if possible.  Any suggestions?    Thanks for all the help.

try this sight, he has a number and he is the cheapest man on the block. he's hard to get ahold of but keep trying, tell him what you have and he's got it!

Natchez Shooters Supply offers the best prices on Williams sights.
By the way the Williams sight is milled out of wrought (not cast) aircraft aluminum alloy that is stronger than the steel commonly used for receiver sights.

One of my front sights is the XS blade with vertical white stripe. I've been impressed with it's visibility in low light. Also I think best accuracy is achieved with the blade over a bead.

I have the Williams FP on two different rifles and like it a lot. The tang might be a better target sight because it increases the distance between front and rear sights which attributes to better accuracy.
Whichever you use be sure to take the target disc out of it and use the bare aperature for hunting. Best of luck. POW

I've been using a Williams 5D receiver sight for several years on my Wild Boar rifle a Marlin 94 in 44 mag.  I think it cost about $25 back when I got it, and worth it's weight in gold.  Don't let the price, or the fact that it's aluminum sway you, it is very rugged, and a best buy.
