New to me addition to collection
« on: February 08, 2011, 03:55:31 PM »
About nine months ago I spotted a contender with two barrels in the showcase of a little local gun shop near to me (not one I get to frequently 'cause it is in an adjacent state, just over the line).  I note that the barrels are in .357 Herrett and 7 mm TCU.  Now I already have a 7 TCU in 14 inch (both these barrels are 10 inch).  Don't own a 357 Herrett, but have a 30 Herrett.  Asked the owner price as there was none on it, he said he just got it in and wanted $695.00 for the package and that both barrels came with their respective reloading dies.  O.K., not a great price, I think, and thank him and leave.  Came back a couple of times, noted that the price came down some about two months ago, but not enough to interest me.  Went back again recently, price was dropped to $349.00 for the entire package.  At that price I had to have it.  Dealer even offered to personally deliver the gun to my Pa. dealer, so no shipping.  I am giving the tcu barrel and dies to a friend and shooting buddy who has been helping me finish my 'man cave', a 36foot by 48 foot two level building we are refurbrishing from it's former life as an Amish harness shop to my new digs - it sits about 50 feet from my house.  We are running electric, gas and water from the main house and removing about half of the windows (need some wall space and less outside light as will have electric for lighting). Will keep and play with the 357 Herrett and have an extra frame to boot. Don't run into such bargains often!

Would say you really got a great deal ;D Had a 30 herrett  never thot the case  forming or trimming was bad.   357 should be even easier.

Pawn shops and gun shoppes will have bargains because single-shot guns move slowly. I am watching a Contender in a local shoppe, it will start it's downward spiral soon.

Well, just paid off one lay-away (the contender package) now, today laid away another gun, a Marlin model 1895 LTD with a half oct barrel in 45-70.  Found it in a lgs today marked $495.00 in like new condition with a tang site added.  Didn't even argue price with the owner, just placed it on their 90 day lay away.  Wonder why I never seem to have any money? ::)

I love my 10" 357 Herrett and 3leggedturtle is right, it is easier to form brass for than my 30 Herrett.  I don't get to spend much time on load development, but I either got lucky or the 357 is not too picky about loads.  I am very pleased with both the accuracy and level of power (not too much, not too little IMO).  It's also lots of fun to shoot!  Congrats on a great deal!
