New bullet styles?
« on: February 10, 2011, 03:28:08 AM »
Do ya'll think the manufacturers will ever undate the bullets in 22LR. Rem, Hornady and CCI have all come up with jacketed ballistic tipped bullets for the 22MAG. The 17 stuff is the same way. Why not 22LR?

Inquiring minds would like to know...

Um, it's a little different design than the jacketed bullets and it's velocity isn't enough to require or even function well with a jacket? That's my take on it.

In addition to what has been said above, first of all both the .22 WMR as well as the .17 HMR and .17 MachII use a full diameter conventional designed bullet which is jacketed. The cartridge case was designed to use a full diameter bullet.

The .22 LR uses a soft lead bullet that has a heel behind the driving band (the heel is the portion of the .22 LR Bullet that sits inside of the .22 LR Cartridge Case) that is much smaller in diameter than the driving band.

Upon firing the pressure from the burning powder produces gases that work to upset or expand the base of this bullet that along with the drving bands of the bullet seal the bullet to the bore.

There has been talk of a Tipped .22 LR Bullet for years but I have yet to see one on dealers shelves.

One of the companies is now making an all copper 22 LR for those that need NO lead.
But with the explosive results of a Yellow jacket or stinger I really do not see the need for a 22LR ballistic tip.

Didn't we just have a long thread on this a few months ago?

Sorry Kieth,
Unless it was mixed in with another topic, I've been back thru May of last year without seeing anything like this. I did find a lot of other stuff that interested me, though.

That first thread was an interesting one for sure.  If it had been a little older I wouldn't have said anything because it was well worth the bandwidth.
