Skeet under the lights!
« on: December 19, 2003, 06:18:54 AM »
Well; There I was; heard there was going to be a shooting and I went to see.  A new range in Grayson County Texas,(going north on US Hwy 75 from Dallas, to Howe, Tx) If you build it they will come. I saw the lights as told and followed them in to the range. It was about 6:45pm and for sure dark. I watched a couple of guys shoot there first round of skeet and laugh and kid each other at the end. Intros made and I was invited to join them. I started my excuses from the gitgo. " I have not shot an actual skeet course in 30 years". Honest Injun! I was clean up in the line of 4 and watched the 3 ahead of me intensely. There were helpful hints from the shooters as we went along. After a fast and furious round I had scored 11 of 25. My ego (somewaht bruised) was stroked on how well I did after my extended vacation from skeet. I sat out a round to watch and learn. I joined in again for the last round of the evening. (Range closes at 9:00pm) Well, There I was, changed chokes from Skeet to I/C and went from 7.5's to 8's. After the smoke had cleared I went 16 of 25. This was with my Beretta 391 Urika Camo. I did ask for help locating it if I laid it down in the grass. Real nice guys said they would. I'll try my hand at trap next, also under the lights as they have a little fun shoot on Thurs evenings. It is impossible not to enjoy clays when everybody else is having so much fun. It was cold but there is a jet engine heater not far from the sidewalk to warm up with and hot coffee in the shop. Great evening and meeting new folks. After this long story I have but one question; DOES IT GET EASIER IN THE DAYLIGHT??

Thanks,

Randy

Talk about cold. I shot my first ever round under lights many many years ago in St. Louis in the dead of winter. Snow was deep. Wicked wind. Sure don't recall my score but to compound things even more the fellow I was visiting with hauled out a couple of .410s for us to shoot. We lasted a couple of rounds before going back to his house and me to my motel room to warm up.

Shooting under the lights is a lot different than in day light. With trap if the tops are reflective it can be easier than in day I think. Lights on skeet are a definite handicap. Not necessarily so on trap.

So yup it do get easier on skeet in the day light. I promise.

Our club doesn't have lights so we change to saturday afternoons when the time changes to standard.   The location No. PA mountains in a valley with the north wind funneling  right down past the high house makes skeet a whole-nother ball game.   I have seen the high house strike the snow before the out of bounds stake at about 70+ MPH.   I sometimes wonder if the tears in your eyes are freezing.  Makes you really enjoy April finally coming.   We don't bother keeping score in order to not be to embarressed.
