Hit the range today.
« on: January 23, 2011, 09:42:16 AM »
We hit the range this morning and I tested out my new .223 with the BSA Sweet .223 scope.

I managed to get it hitting 2" at 100 yards with a few fliers but it wasn't terrible especially considering I was shooting the cheapest ammo I could find. It was so damn cold I couldn't feel my face or trigger finger so I called it a day at that point.

I didn't get as many rounds through it as I hoped but it was a good start, I was hoping to get at least 40 to get everything broken in a little bit.

I can tell already that the trigger pull is far to heavy for my tastes, I caught myself jerking instead of squeezing toward the end because it is at least 3 lbs heavier than my other rifles, hopefully it smooths itself out over time. I'll give it 100 rounds first before considering having it polished up though.

I swapped out scopes on mine yesterday, crappy Bushnell for my Fullfield II, and got to shoot mine this afternoon.  I can say it wasn't that cold here though!   ;D  I'm basically burning through some old ammo I have and need to get some dies and bullets before spring gets here so I can work up a load for it.  It' shooting minute of coyote for now!
Which lie got to you so that you refuse Him???

Look at the bright side, you didn't have to wait for the barrel to cool down. Getting 2" groups for your first range trip with cheap ammo ain't nothing to sneeze at.

Well curiosity and boredom got the best of me this afternoon. I tore the trigger and hammer out and polished everything up (that little pin proved to be a pain in the ass), then gave the sear about 5 good rubs on my whetstone, lubed the hell out of everything and put it back together.

Much nicer trigger now, still stiffer than I want it to be but I don't dare do any more for fear of the hammer not locking back. It doesn't feel like an actual struggle to get it to break now though, pulls more like my favorite .22.

I am anxious to get back out and finish sighting it, but I think I am going to buy a box of UMC 55 grain to do it so I can take the russian ammo out of the equation as well. I feel like this gun has lots of potential, we just have to get used to each other.
