Funky twist rate in new NEF
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:50:25 AM »
Just for the heck of it today I ran a cleaning rod with a patch down my barrel to measure the twist rate, I am getting a consistent 1:11 twist out of my CBA stamped .223

I assume that I am doing something wrong because in the FAQ there isn't any calibers listed with a 1:11 rate. I put my brass rod on the table, then drew a solid line up the side of it. Put a patch in the barrel and pushed it through about two inches, then marked on the muzzle where the line was and marked 9, 10, 11, and 12 inches farther up on the rod.

When the line makes one complete twist it ends up at 11". Anybody have any insight?

Try a brush instead of the patched jag, it may not be tight enough to follow the shallow rifling, it also helps to have a rod with a handle that allows the rod to turn freely, ball bearing is the best, one with a solid joint doesn't allow the rod the freedom of movement it needs, the rifling is only about .002" deep.

BTW, H&R hasn't made any NEF branded frames for quite awhile, they've all been marked Harrington & Richardson starting in about 2007.  ;)

Thanks, I think I jumped to early on posting. I realized that as I was running it my rod was coming unscrewed messing up my results ::)

I flipped it over and it worked fine 1:9 twist.

Whew, had me concerned for a bit, they've caused a lot of confusion with 223 twist rates before, back and forth between 1:12" and 1:9' for over two years!  :-\

Thanks for the confirmation!  ;)

Good luck with your 1~9 twist .223.  Mine, with the new checkered synthetic stock climbed out of the box and shot Russian fmj .55 gr. wonderfully.  If the temperature ever climbs above 10 F, and the wind drops below 15 or 20 mph, I may take it out for a stroll.  That day will probably be in May ???

Funny you should say that, this afternoon the Fedex guy is supposed to drop off 200 rounds of steel cased Russian stuff.

For 3.50 a box I have to try it, if it will hit minute of coyote at 200 yards I'm gonna order another 1000 rounds.

It is hovering in the low teens here today, I am going to sight it in Sunday but it's calling for a high of 2, so most likely it will need to be re-sighted come spring.

I keep waiting for a warmer day to go and try out my new H&R 45-70.  It's 45 below here today, and I'm not talking chill factor.  I'm just waiting for zero.  That's nice shooting weather for me.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
