.445 SM Ammo
« on: January 14, 2011, 12:56:39 PM »
Well as I previously reported, I did the reaming of my handi rifle to the .445 SM. Now finding brass as you all know is like finding hens teeth. Well I went to the INDY 1500 gun show in Indianapolis today and checked table after table after table. No go on any....Well lo and behold as we were getting ready to leave, a vendor did have some!!!! He had one box of 50 loaded and a box of 50 primers. I bought both. The 50 loaded ones say they are custom case using a sierra 250 JFP over 30 Grn of VVN 120. Primers were CCI350. Nice looking rounds. Only problem is that my action will not lock up on them. It locks up fine on the brass. The unloaded brass is headstamped .445 SM IHMSA. A quick check shows both cases are same length. I did place a 240 gr cast bullet into one of the IHMSA brass and the action closes fine. It appears that the rim cut on reloads may not be as deep as the IHMSA brass.

Well in any case, I got them at a decent price so at least I have 50 I can reload myself. Not sure what to do with the other 50........

The brass I got had label inside that they had loaded a 240 Grain Speer over 32.5 gr of WW296 with a CCI 200 primer and that the velocity was 1580 FPS.

So anyway, I am still learning. Any input guys?????

To add some more info. I believe I have discovered what the problem is with the loaded ammo. The fix is another matter.

According to reloading manual, .44 mag brass is .514 diameter on the case rim(head to me). That is approx what my empty .44 brass is and also what the unloaded .445SM brass is that I bought.

Now the loaded custom .445SM brass measures approx .527 diameter....Hmmmmm looks to be about .013 too big. All other dimensions are about the same.

How to safely turn down the rims from .527 to .514 is the question??????

Grrrrrr.....But at lease I have 50 to work with.

That load of 32.5 grs of 296 and a 240 gr. bullet will get you close to 2250 fps.in your Handi.Thats the load I used and its a good one.Hope you get the ammo fixed.  Digger

what is the headstamp on the brass with .527" rim diameter?  Somebody might have resized another caliber to 445SM, hopefully not a 410 all brass.

I'd pull the bullets, powder and deprime that loaded ammo, seat a bullet and chuck the brass up in a drill and turn the rim down with a file, I dunno if it would be safe to do it to loaded ammo, but it would definitely be a lot safer if you're only working with the brass.  ;)

Unfortunately it does not have a headstamp. I did check with my calipers and all the measurements equal the .44 mag brass with the exception of the length of course and the rim being oversize.

I think the suggestion to pull the bullets and so on will be the way to turn the rim down to usable range. Hey at least I got something to work with. It's all a learning experience.

No headstamp?  Check the rim thickness and make sure it isn't a little thin from having the original stamp removed with a belt sander.  I can't say why I know you can remove a headstamp this way. ;D  I brought up 410 all brass earlier because the 410 rim diameters are around .527" and can easily be resized into 444M or 44 Mag.  The only 410 all brass I know of is Magtech and it is fairly thin.  On most plastic/brass 410 hulls the rim is hollow, I do not know how the Magtech brass is constructed.  Hopefully you are working with rifle or pistol brass.  Good luck.

I found some cut down .30-40 brass and had the same problem.  I did as Tim says, and it worked fine.  I'd pull them, trim the rim, make sure they chamber and eject or extract and reload them.

I measured with the calipers and the "no headstamp brass" is the same thickness as the regular .44 and the IHMSA .445 brass. So no problem on thin rim thickness. Only difference is the diameter. So guessing I will go the pull, file and reload route. Thanks for all the input guys.

I'd put them in a lathe collet and set the tool for the dia. and trim to it, deburr the edges and shoot.
But thats just me.......

I forgot to mention, Midway told me they expected .445 brass Feb. 7th.....we'll wait and see.

I know one thing for sure, when it does come, I'm buying a bunch and not going through this again.

Sounds like an oppurtunity for a non-445SM owner weasel to do a little profiteering. ;D

No Tom, I'm a hoarder.  I've got junk "I may need some day".  The crazy thing is, when I finally get rid of it, it seems like within minutes I need it. ::)

Got it all turned down. Went fine and it's ready to go now. Too much snow to go to my range so that will have to wait a few days.

I did check each and every round to ensure good lockup. All is well.

Can't wait to see what this baby will do.

Also I will pick up some brass if and when Midway gets a shipment.

Thanks again to everyone for the kind words and assistance. Your knowledge amazes me.
