Trap recommendations
« on: December 24, 2010, 03:24:16 PM »
I was looking at my truck the other morning and found that I had a half truck load of traps it sounded like an auction as I went through them, I had 1s,11s, 1.5s, 1.75s, 2s, and 3s.  Well I got to thinking, I could reduce my load of gear if I consolidated some traps I mean there really isn't a lot of difference in a 1.5, 1.75, and 2.  What I am looking to do is to use a single type of foothold trap for coyotes, bobcat, coon, and otter. I was looking at jumping from the 1.5s to 3s eliminating the 1.75s and 2s.  I live in KY so I am restricted to a six inch inside jaw spread.  I am sure that I am not the first on here to want to do this so let me learn from your experience.  What trap do you recommend and what mods does it need to work and how has it worked out for you.  Thanks in advance for the info.

Leo, there is no one trap for every animal. While a #3 may work for a lot of your animals--it is to much trap for coon.
There is a reason there are so many different traps--so many different animals.

I agree with Bogmaster. You need more than just one standard trap to catch the assorment of animal you mentioned. That said I would use the 1.75's and 2's. The 1.75's could work for coon, fox and coyote and in a pinch work for otter as long as they were modified with base plate, wider jaws and lots of swivels. Same for the #2's. With the proper modifications they would work for all the animals on your list. If it were me I would just sort through my traps and use the appropiate trap for the animal I plan to catch. I would put them in 5 gallon buckets and mark them for easy identification. Me and my trapping partner run a multi species line and have all the traps in buckets and every morning before we run the line we sort through them and take what we need for thats days line. Use the biggest traps you are allowed to use for otter though as they are very tough from what I have read and heard. Just my opinion.

I agree, too many animals for 1 trap, but, if I had to choose only 1 trap for those mentioned it would be #2 vic. Nothing against any other brand or size, that is what I started with and I don't  have any problems w/animals pulling out. I've held coyote w/2 toes and seldom break a coon's leg. I'm "old school" I guess, if it works don't fix it. JMO

Thanks for the info, I have read several articles lately about folks using laminated 3 CS for these species and was looking for someone who was actually doing it because as we all know what happens in articles and in the field is often very different.

I'd have to agree that the #2s probably split the differance the best if you were just going to use one trap. Heck I met a guy used a lot of #2s for mink, choosing to catch them by both front feet and across the chest. But as many here have already said there really is no one trap the fits every situation. It's kind of like buying a boat same deal, and you don't see the navy with just one kind of ship or boat.

I guess I need to clarify my post a little bit in that I was only referring to land sets and of course for the otter some water sets.  I would still stay with the 1.5s for muskrat, mink and water coon.  The coon catches in the land sets would be incidental catches.  If I am setting on dry land specifically for coon I would use either a 220 or a DP trap depending on location.  But I do appreciate everyones input.  It is a lot easier to ask than to reinvent the wheel.

Look at a Montana # 2 rj, I went to them great all around trap.  Another sleeper trap is a Duke # 3, a few mods and good to go.

Coalminer, I agree on the Duke #3s I have some and changed out the swivels and chain, adjusted pan tension and leveled the pan and have been real happy with them.  Are you 4 coiling, laminating and baseplating yours or what?
