NEF Handi Rifle Youth Ultralight
« on: January 20, 2011, 06:05:03 AM »
I am thinking about buying my son a Handi rifle youth ultralight in 243 win.  My question is can any of the high pressure barrels be fitted to the fram that comes with the youth UL rifle. Is this a SB2 frame or some thing difference. I would be interested in any info. Thanks Tom

Yes, as long as it was made 2000 or later, see the FAQs year of mfr list. It's the same SB2 frame as on any other SB2 rifle. The Superlight barrel will be 20" long, 22" barrels are standard contour, some H&R "youth" rifles just have a short stock, regular barrel.

It is an SB2 frame and all barrels can be fit to it (except the larger 10 gauge and the RF barrels).  Keep in mind the ultralight 243 will kick the crap out of him.  Larry

+1 to that... the recoil of the 243 superlight is sharp and nasty.

If you get a wood stock, you can get a recoil reducer to fit it.  For my daughters 44 mag, it reduced the recoil significantly.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

Not to go against what others are saying, but my 49 lb. 7 year old doesn't have any problem with the recoil of the H&R 243.  The first time he shot it he had that, "this isn't a 22" look in his eyes, but I distracted him with compliments of a good shot and he never complained.

...having said that, I do think a 44 or 357 is a great first choice, and I'll probably do that for my daughter.

I too vote for the .357.  As the kid grows, you can ream it to Maxi and it's a lifetime rifle.  It'll do whatever you want, little pop squirt .38's to full load maxis.  The Mags will sure take a deer and not hurt the kid.  Good luck and good shooting to you and the boy, whichever way you go.

Nobody has mentioned that this particular ultra light is aslo ultra sensitive too barrel heating.

I remember several threads from this past summer with folks complaining of 243 inaccuracy being the result of fireing even a second shot in a string without several minutes cool down between shot's.

He is a good sized boy. I hunt with a  Ruger (5 pound) 308 and he has no problem with that recoil. I also load for all my weapons so I can make it what every I want and it will not be for plinking or target as we use 22's for that. I think he will manage if not I have a nice light .243. Thanks for all the great replys

With a little forend attention which is well covered in the FAQs, that's not an issue, specially for a deer hunting rifle where only one shot, possible two at the most will be fired, that first cold bore shot is the one that counts.  ;) It may take more time to find the load that it likes using factory ammo, but a little patience at the range will get you there, both of my Superlights shoot good to excellent, and they're a real pleasure to carry, specially for a youngster or an oldster!  ;D
