The question of velocity loss in a 15" pistol barrel came up in the post about suitable elk rounds and short action rounds vs '06 based rounds.  For those of you who have real life data please share with us your 15" velocity readings of your 30/06's and 308's.

I'm of the opinion you won't gain much velocity by using a 30/06 over a 308 for the same bullet weight out of a 15" Encore barrel.

I know you will out of a rifle, especially with the heavier bullets, just don't think 15" is enough to burn up that extra powder.

It's been a while since I sent any bullets over the chronograph.  However, my favorite load in my 30-06 JDJ does a solid 2715 fps (as measured at 15 ft from the muzzle) with 168 gr. C-T Ballistic Silvertips.

I've pushed the Barnes 165 XBT (coated version) to 2650 fps.

I've also pushed 150 CT Ballistic Silvertips to 2915 fps.  180 gr. Nosler Partitions have chrono'd 2550 fps from my 30-06 JDJ.  I could get more from this one, but recoil was quite stout and accuracy was falling off as velocity/powder charge went up.  Perhaps a different powder would have been more accurate....

As a note of interest, my barrel used to be a 308 Win.  As a 308 Win, the following velocities were observed:

150's @ 2575
165's @ 2500
180's @ 2422 (Remington 180gr PSPCL factory ammo)

Regards,

Rog

How does a 30/06 JDJ compare to a 30/06?  BTW, great info.

The 30-06 JDJ has a sharp 60 degree shouldered, 0.250" short neck, with minimal body taper.  It's much like an 'improved' version of the 30-06 Ackley Improved.

I don't know for certain how it compares to the std. 30-06 ballistically, but I do believe it is slightly better in terms of ballistic capability.  SSKIndustries.com will have additional information.

I recall seeing in print some time ago, where the 30-06 Spr. was listed as doing a bit over 2700 fps with 150's with handloads.  That's the only ballistic data I've seen in a publication.  It is my personal opinion that the standard 30-06 Spr. is capable of doing about 100 fps more than the 308 Win with equal bullets.

The only downside to the 30-06 JDJ is the case forming.  It has to be done a specific way since factory ammo can't be fired in the JDJ chamber to produce the brass.

I really like the 30-06 JDJ.  Don't care for the case forming, but I do like the round.
