A Trapper's Tip for a inexpensive catch pole
« on: January 01, 2011, 12:53:25 PM »
I was bored today so I decided to make myself a catch pole for trapping purposes since I never had one .

Supply List
3/4" Scd 40 PVC
4 - 3/4" end caps
1/8 coated cable
2 cable stops

Cost
$15.37

I cut the PVC down to a 3 1/2' section. Center drilled two of the end caps. drilled a hole 1 1/3" up from one end. Slipped one end of the cable through the drill hole and out the end of the PVC. I cut the coating off of the end, slipped a cable stop over the cable, hammered it closed, and pulled it back in the PVC. I put one drilled end cap on and slipped the other end of the cable all the way through, put on the other drilled end cap. I took a 5" cut off PVC (for the cable pull handle) and drilled a hole in the middle, slipped the cable through, cut the coating off of the end, applied a cable stop and pulled it back inside the handle. I also put the other two end caps on the handle as well.
It turned out pretty nice and is still stiff enough to handle a good size coyote if need be.

Absolute cheapest easiest catch pole I've ever made or used? Take what ever you have for a pole/stick/pipe. Hang a loop on the end big enough and of what ever size cord you need to rangle said critter to be rangled. Once the loop is over the critters head twist the pole to tighten the slack against the pole. I also teach this as a reach method for ice and water rescue to snag a persons wrist. If you can't quit picture in your head what I mean. Let me know and I'll take some pictures to post.
That said I have a home made hog snare style catch stick I use.

Fish,
I took your suggestion and bought one of them tensioners today.

Mac,
You & my newphew teach the same classes. He told me the same thing as you did.

Thanks Fellas!
