« on: December 15, 2010, 09:09:14 AM »
Anyone ever durocoat an encore? Frame and or barrel? What does it involve?

Thanks
Matt

I've been thinking about this myself, however painting the synthetic butt stock and forend blaze orange on a blued Encore.

Not sure if these are duracoated, but some nice designs on Swiss service rifles...

I have an encore pistol that I neglected a little by keeping it in the truck and would love to try duracoating the barrel and receiver but just haven't dared yet until I hear from someone who has done it.

Check out some of the videos on duracoat.  This one by "nutnfancy" on youtube is pretty informative.  The only negative comment I have heard is that if the weapon gets warm (sometimes with fast firing semi-autos) the paint can get "soft".  I don't assume this would happen on a TC single shot.  I have been concerned about where the Encore opens/closes might rub too much.

Cure time and cure method is critical, as is metal prep. Done right, it is really durable. I've done 3 bolt actions and one scope.
I air-dried (rather than oven), and I think there is curing going on for maybe a couple weeks that way. Assembly you can usually do after a couple days, but a week is better. Main error I made was to use their cleaner after roughing up the metal. Shouldn't have used anything, had to do that one over.
Their call-in live help guy was very friendly and helpful. Patience while waiting for the cure is key, I learned that the hard way too. ;D

I am really interested about how well the barrel  fits in the receiver after it is done.

Fit  is fine
Like other finishes frame marks will be noticeable
He advised tried different thickness of Durocoat and had frame marks in all of them
will  not hurt finish. Need same care as other finishes.

Not sure what you ment by need same care as other finishes. If it is going to rust with duracoat on it I won't waste my time or money.

Did not  say it was going to rust
just as with a blue barrel it is possible to get the frame marks on barrel
I clean and oil my barrels after use I have not had one rust yet
I do not think this barrel will either

Pictures.... I want to see some pictures as well..  I've got a new stainless prohunter I'm thinking about going solid OD green on.  I've done it on a couple of bolt guns, but I haven't ever seen an Encore that's been painted.

I have never tried the process myself! I did have this blued G2 frame Duracoated in a S.S. finish by Dave at the Gun Garage. I do not think the process will stop a gun from rusting but will retard rust from starting with proper care. I would think they would still need a certain amount of care. Even S.S. will rust if neglected for to long.

That is a very unusual forend stock.  Who did the work if I may ask?

That set I made from Maple Burl. All my TC's and MOA's wear wood I made.
