DPMS Classic LoPRo 223 "16 barrell
« on: December 31, 2010, 05:54:23 AM »
Yesterday I looked at this rifle and decided to trade my 875 Supermag 12 ga. for it. I am somewhat concerned about the barrell lenght. Should I be?
Would like to hear opinions, or any one that has used this rifle for Coyotes.
It was a decesion of eother this or a used Savage 200 243. It was used and for the price I felt I could have purchaed a new one.

Is it possible to change the barrels to say a 243?

What scope to put on it will be my next step. any suggestions? I live in Illinois and doubt that I will be taking 300 yard shots. And with the 16" barrell I am not sure that this would be the rifle to try long shots.

Thanks

I'm not an AR person but you have entered another dimension with your purchase!  The AR platform is one of the most owner customizable guns out there.  Just look at the amount of parts for them from any major gunparts suppliers like Midway.  I know someone makes them in .308 and .243 but I don't know what that involves.

The 16" tube should be good for what you want.  You'll lose a little velocity but if it is a good shooter and puts the bullets in the same place every time it will work great.

Good luck and let us know how it shoots!

Thanks,
I have gotten into a realm unknown to me. I looked at my popst and need to say that I traded my 870, not 875.lol
After many hours of checking out the scope possibilities I am going to put the Nikon M223 scope on it.

The .243 and .223 are not interchangeable.  The dimensions for the upper and lower receivers are different due to the length difference of the cartridge.

With a little effort and money, you could do a 6x45 swap.  It would actually be a lot cheaper than going in other directions and give you the 6mm platform, although with less velocity/energy than a .243.

I wouldn't worry too much about a 300yd shot with a 16" barrel...do some searching on the M4 carbines that we've been using for a little while.  Some boys still have to qualify well past the 300yd mark with the M4.

If it`s accurate enough to suit you,and it should be, use it as is. For my close up and personal work on coyote I like the 3 x 9 Leupold although I have never killed a coyote with the scope set on anything other than 3X. A 2 1/2 x 7 power scope would be good too. If your looking for a good cheap bullet try the Mid South Varmint Nite Mares. I like the 55 gr. bullets. They are alittle soft, but they don`t ricochet bad and they usually stay in the coyote.

I live in IL as well, been using a lowpro for several years now. Don't be concerned about that short bbl it will do its job if you do yours. Love the rifle as it is handy to carry, only disadvantage is the noise level of the short barre.l I have a bushnell 3200 10X40 on mine.
