Old school

Caught a nice female coyote today. Nothing new there, (bragging a little) but caught her in a victor 3N on a drag. I have for years always thought I needed all the latest gadgets to try and outsmart fox and coyote, but it ain't so. For the last 5 or 6 years I've gone to making my own baits and lures and when I was given these older traps I figured I'd give them a try. I was pleasantly surprized to see just how well they did on coyotes. Those cast jaws got a very good above the pad hold on her and there was no damage or slippage of her foot even after fighting the drag a little. Just wish I could afford to use all 3N's on my line. I did install a paws-I-trip pan and base plate on the trap. Still like my bridger coils, but the #3dls will always have a place on my line.

I'm a compulsive tinker and any trap I get my hands on gets beefed up. My wife bought me one of those 110 wire feed welders about 5 years ago and I have really put it to good use. You are right though, those #3dls's don't need much to grab ahold of something and not let go. Caught another coyote today, but snared it. Easier to run snares with this freezing weather than to try and keep a lot of footholds operating. Got plenty of waxed dirt and calcium cloride though so as long as the fur is still nice I'll keep a few foot traps out.

wasn't the acceptable loss rate by the old govt trappers on 3ns something like 25%?

I've never heard that before, but it maybe what they could live with. I can't find any loss acceptable, but it does happen. I haven't lost any coyote in foothold traps this years (fingers crossed) but have lost two in snares. Been trying the stiffer 1X19 cable on coyotes and both losses came from the stiffer cable. Think I'll stick with the 7X7 with the big washer locks. Once those washers start moving they don't stop.

I used dbls traps for 50 years including the 3N and never had any complaints. As for a 25% loss rate I've never heard of such a thing. I have never had a loss rate with any kind of trap even the infamous old #2 Victor square jaws I had set for fox and caught lots of coyotes and bobcats in them.
