beaver?
« on: December 17, 2010, 05:21:49 AM »
i went and checked out a place where the beaver were cutting..there were fresh cuts but not since the snow fell there is shelf ice but its broke up i can push it out away from the bank..while i was there i seen a beaver come out from under the ice.im not sure but i think there is a bank den under bout three feet of water..i was thinking about trying some baited 330s.and a castor mound guarded by a mb 750..what do yall beaver trappers think.i cant get to the den.and hows the best way to make a baited 330 set.it was a big beaver and had nice fur and ill get a lot of meat for fox bait.

Fish,I don't do baited sets except for under ice beaver.I did years ago,but a bottle of beaver lure is so much easier to carry than a bunch of popple.
Break that shelf ice away in several spots, throw some mud up,slap on some beaver lure and throw a blocked off 330 in front of the mound.
I quit with the footholds for beaver about 12 years ago.Now its--gang set 330s and make some castor mounds.

Is there open water out a ways from shore? Or is this the place that is frozen all the way across?

Break out channels as far ouy as you can go,as you get closer to the open water,it should get thinner. If it is thin enough, find a long pole and break your channels right out to the open water. If this isn't possible, just break out as far as you can go.

Very seldom is there--only 1 beaver.I have run into it a couple times, but most times there are several.
 Good luck.

Fishdaddy,
Just think.... When you get to the top of the hill, you can look downhill and say "Thank God for gravity"! We're not getting old. We're just getting worn out!

Had a coyote tear up a really nice prime red fox. Sorta makes you work a little harder to catch them coyotes. Our beaver season opens day after christmas, can't wait.

Good deal on catching the coyote. I think there are a few coyotes that know they can find free meals from following the tracks of hunters and trappers. Those are the kinds that we need to catch. Of course I could just be paranoid. Coyotes are pretty much hunting machines and take whatever meal comes their way.
