Drilled barrel
« on: December 24, 2010, 07:36:07 AM »
I recently purchased a .280 barrel that had open sights installed on it. The front sight ramp is attached to the barrel with a small screw. Whoever did the job drilled right through the barrel. How will this affect the barrel 's performance? Worst case scenario is that I can get the barrel cut a couple of inches and recrowned.
Any suggestions???

It may or may not affect the accuracy. Check to be sure there are no burrs where it entered the bore and fire for effect. If you get about moa at 100 yards and if that's good enough for you for hunting you are GTG. No biggie really, but he should have been more careful. An easy fix if you have to, cut and crown, redrill for the front sight if needed or desired. H&R .280's are great rifles. I have two, a full length one and another cut to 19". My "Thunderboomer". It's a bit loud but very handy and accurate. I can get about MOA with it with factory Remington ammo as long as I do my part....<><....:)

I polished the bore with JB paste and there are no burrs around the hole. I hope it's OK, I was quite happy to get my hands on a .280.

As long as there are no burrs there shouldn't be a problem.  Gas operated semi automatics have a hole to bleed gas to operate the action and there are no problems.

I'd shoot it and see.  It should be fine.  It's funny, but all my Handis have a hole at the end where the bullet comes out ::) ::) ::)

Seriously, everyone I know who has a .280 loves them.  Good luck with yours.  If I wasn't so wrapped up in straight walls, I'd get one.

I would shoot it and see; if it does good forget it.
Let us know how it shoots!

Your right, my AR's have a gas bleed off hole in them, never thought of that....<><....:)

Just consider it lightly ported. Fire for effect

Run a really long screw all the way into the barrel, then try to shoot it. Just Kidding!! DO NOT TRY TO SHOOT IT WITH AN OBSTRUCTED BARREL!!!!!!!
I'd say if it didn't drill through the high parts of the rifling, it prob won't affect it. Try it out and let us know how it shoots.

My guess is that after drilling through he decided not to actually tap it all the way to; if he did he was more of a knob than I already think.

As stated, as long as there are no burrs it will be perfectly fine.

A number of manufacturers have made thru the barrel style of porting for years and years. A threaded hole, filled with a correctly sized screw will do nothing adverse to anything sans looks.
