Not sure which Handi ?
« on: December 18, 2010, 09:57:40 PM »
I'am going to get a new handi-rifle and decided on .44 cal. But I'am not sure whether the .44 mag or the .444 Marlin
my longest shot would be 150 yrd's at most. That is probably streching it. It will be used for Whitetail deer. Yes
I do reload.

So some opinions would be greatly appericated.

Thanks,

What do you plan on doing with it?  Punch some paper or maybe a little deer/elk hunting?  Do you reload?  If not factory .44 Magunum rounds are less expensive.
I debated this a long time ago and ended up with the .44 mag. as where I deer hunt the longest shot taken in less than 100yds. I reload and also have a T/C contender in .44 mag so their was not too much to debate.

Sorry about that Tommie, after I saw your post I see I didn't say what it would be used for.

That 44 is a good choice... 24 gr of 296 and a 240 xtp is a great deer load...

The .357 reamed to the max would be good Christmas present for you as well...

Lots of info here on both of them...

Merry Christmas

Since you reload the .444 is it; you can make any load from .44Spl (or even less with a round ball) on up to full house .444 factory equivelents. Plus the long case is just cool and easy to handle. I used to use my 44 Mag carbide dies to reload mine, but I did have a .444 FL sizer for when I got new brass or needed to FL resize a hot loaded case.

If you are going to use it almost exclusively for hunting, the .444 Marlin is far more versatile for big game.+

If you are going to use it to hunt, plink, target shoot, etc., then go with the .44 Mag, but  you had better be able to place your shots well.  The .44 Mag is not generally a good choice for a shot on a large animal at 150 yards.  You will be at the outer edge of its practical useful hitting power.  You will need to load them up hot.

The only answer for a true dyed in the wool Handiholic would be BOTH!!  ;D But the .444 can be loaded down to 44mag velocities if you handload, or anything in between, modern(2007 and later) 444 H&Rs have a 1:20" twist compared to 1:38" for the 44mag.  If you get the 44mag, just be sure to get a late model with a tight bore, those made before late 2006 were very overbore.

quickdtoo, I was wondering where can I find some Load data for the .444 that is down to .44mag velocities?
All I have found is heavy loads for the .444.

Can you point me in the right direction ?

Thanks,

My wife carried a .44Mag for many years.  She has taken a few Whitetail, a turkey, one Black Bear, and a couple of Wolves.  I killed one Moose with it and a friend borrowed it to kill a Moose in his yard.  I started Sky out with it, but after one month his Mother upgraded him to the 45-70.

My Dad shot a .444 Marlin for many years, but it proved to be too much gun for him.  He was a skinny tall man, that never weighted much over 160 lbs at 6'1".  Dad gave it to my brother, who has used it to take many Deer, Turkey, and Coyotes.

If you are only hunting Whitetails at 100 yards or less the .44 Mag will do the job.  At anything over that I would go with the .444.

Got to thinking about the guy that borrowed the wife's .44 to shoot the Moose.  When he came up to borrow a gun, she opened the vault and let him pick what he wanted, thinking he knew what he was looking at.  He passed a 45-70, and a couple of 30-06s, to reach the .44 Mag.  He picked it because it was a lever action, and he was familure with it.  Later after he had killed the Moose on his door step, he came over to return the gun saying it only took one shot.  A few days later his wife mentioned his shooting the Moose on the front walkway, and all the blood that would be staining the walk come spring.  He cut her off saying "one shot killed it".  She then commented, "What were the first four for, to weight him down so he could not run away"?  The truth came out!

jr 1968:  Google "Trail Boss" or Loads for Cowboy Action Shooters" and there should be something there you can use.  Many of the Cowboy action shooters use a .444, and download for their compatitions.

Another option is get the .44 and ream it to .445....now ya pretty much have both.  I've got 2 spare frames and stock sets, and one is becoming a .444 and the other a .500 S&W.  I've got the Maxi, .445 and the .45-70, etc....It's just the disease........it creeps in on ya. ::)  And no, I'm not blowing out the .45-70 to anything longer.  Rem 405 gr. running at about two grand are enough for this little skinny dude.
