POLL: Encore Deer Hunting w/ Pistol Barrel - Which Caliber?
« on: December 11, 2003, 03:50:44 AM »
Just getting a feel for what y'all like out of the Encore Pistol.  I know I left some out of the poll that you may like, that's where you can post a reply to plead your case.  Any comments on why you like a particular caliber and/or particular barrel length will be greatly appreciated.  Trying to narrow down my choices.

kind of hard to beat the 308.........I have T/C's in 375JDJ and 44 Mag, but, just bought a Savage Striker in 308 which will take over as my main deer hunting pistol..................

How far are you shooting?  For ranges out to 150 yards the 45-70 is a real thumper.  If your shots are farther I would use the 308 loaded with 125 nosler balistic tips.
One shot one kill.

Thanks to all of those who cast thier vote.  Chalk up another for the .308 as I just bought a 15" barrel.  I was leaning heavy toward the 7mm-08, but the fact that I have all the stuff necessary to reload the .308 swayed me to it.

We all have favorites of course. However, from a sensible standpoint with no axe to grind, the 7mm-08 is probably the best Encore deer caliber going. Actually, I think the 260 Remington is perfect, but factory ammo is not as available. The 308 has a bit too much recoil for many newer handgun hunters.

At least the 12 and I would prefer the 15.

I went with the .454 because I live in Iowa and the stupid people here don't allow us to use bottle-necked pistol cartridges!  (I grew up in SD)
My .454 shoots 1" groups at 100 yards out of my Encore, 12" factory barrel with cast bullets and H110

30.06 & .35
« Reply #8 on: December 15, 2003, 03:36:59 PM »
For field shooting I like my 30.06 except the recoil bent my Zee rings.  Now I'm back to square one.  Probably am going to go with the double dovetail setup now.    I am shooting the 165gr Nosler BT @2480fps (15") and the deer are dropping like rocks.

For closer in I prefer the .35 Rem with my Contender.  I re-read the post and see that we are talking about the Encore.  I just wonder if the .35 is as sweet in the Encore as it is in the Contender??????  I actually prefer this setup over the Encore.  I just don't take it to the fields where I hunt.  I keep it for the woods setup where shots are a little closer.

15" :agree:  learn to find a rest, or use a sling as a shooting aid. the 15"er is not hard to carry in the field for me, and gives best performance.

I have had a 308 rifle barrel for a while and just added a 15" 308 pistol barrel.  I chose the 308 Win just due to the availability of factory ammo.  I would think that a 708 would perform just as good or better on deer, however I do not handload and one can find a much broader selection of 308 ammo at a cheaper price than the 708.
