mink after freeze up?

Where do you find mink after freeze up?I have no running water now.Just frozen sloughs and lakes.I'm seeing almost no mink sign now.Thanks.

 wait a week or so, they will still be running the swamps and sloughs,their eating habits will turn more to mice now.You will also see where they will drill rat house in an attempt to secure larger meals of rodentia.

Ok now how do you catch them when they are drilling into rat huts?Pocket sets on rat houses?

 Some of the drilled houses already offer you a set--place the trap in the hut and wait for the rats return.

Most ponds are frozen over around here, but we've been seeing a lot of mink sign. Been setting on it, but haven't connected since the big freeze. Them traps are pretty patient though as long as we let them do their job.

OK, guys, all the creeks and ponds are froze up here in southern KY.  Seen a lot of mink tracks along the frozen creek banks.  My question is, what type of set do you set for these mink when everything is frozen up?

There are a few things you can try.

1.  Blind set on top of rat huts.  Mink set up a trail system on frozen sloughs and like to get on top of huts.

2.  Poke a hole with your arm into a snow bank, place a bait (salted rat leg) in hole, place 110 in front.

3.  A baited 220 with a rat leg will catch some mink.

4.  Mink boxes / cubbies baited with fish or rat meat.

5.  Setup any running open water, even a trickle from a run off area.

6.  Set a 110 over any mink holes in rat huts.

Some of these may not be legal in your area so check regs.

 Mike , how deep is your snow now? You can set the trails they are using.Use a 160 if you have any.

Bottom edge sets. I have been running alot lately. Even better are "channel" sets. Under water, under ice. great for rats as well. I will take some pics this weekend. Also "hot" spots for pockets. If direct southern exposure is not enough, toss in some rock salt. Keep spot wet, muddy (black), and in direct sunlight.

After not having caught anything in the trails aand holes around the pond and overflow we decided to try some bucket sets with 160's using fish oil and a fish oil/mink gland mixture to see if we get any action. The mink tracks went from the overflow down to the creek where it went to the next pond and hunted. It hit the creek again and we haven't seen any fresh tracks in over a week. Figure to give him until beaver season opens and than pull out of this location so we can hit the beaver hard.  Beaver season opens the day after christmas so that will be about two weeks for the mink to maybe make its way back to the ponds. Got our fingers crossed anyways.
