6pt.-3 contender 7-30
« on: December 13, 2003, 09:04:34 AM »
I just shot my first deer with my contender. I was playing my electronic yatzee game. I was in the tree for about 30 min. when he walked down the hill. Half of his rack is missing but he would have been a six. He is about 150lbs. I shot him about 20 yards with my 7-30 waters and he hit the dirt. I shot him through the spine and the bullet went all the way through but didn't break the skin on his side. I shot him once more in the heart to speed things up.

Congratulations you did a fine job! Scoring a six point buck as your first handgun kill is starting right off in the big leagues! It looks like you were using open sights too? Tell us about your load, factory or handload?

Thanks. I was using factory Federal 120 gr. I haven't gotten into hand loading yet.

congratulations! nice deer, nice gun! are you gonna put a scope on it eventually? you would really have some range with that baby then. although a 20 yard shot would be harder, unless you went with a red dot for short range applications. :D

Thanks. I've got a red dot scope, a pistol scope, and a burris rifle scope but I have never liked shooting them on my pistol barrels. The burris is on my bullberry 22" .223. I've got a 7 mm rem mag a-bolt and pentax scope for the long distance shots. I will use my 7-30 for closer ones. I might put my pistol scope back on it. I plan on using my 14" .223 with open sights for turkey this spring.

Nice deer. Hope you get many more. Just keep practicing and shooting those handguns.
