Multiple frames, or just one?
« on: December 11, 2003, 03:40:28 AM »
I've got an encore with the 209X50 barrel and a .223 24" barrel.  I was considering buying a .308 24" barrel for it too, but now I'm thinking I want a pistol barrel.

My question:  Do you guys get by with only one frame, swapping rifle and pistol barrels at will?  Or, do y'all have multiple frames (i.e. one for rifle set-ups and one for pistol set-ups)?  Other than convenience of not having to swap out the buttstock/pistol grip are there any other advantages to having multiple frames?

Thanks for the input.

I have found that I like having more than one frame. I can use two different set ups at the same time this way. A lot of times I have one with my 270 rifle barrel in my truck and another with 308 pistol barrel at the same time. Just depends on the situation which one I pull out to take with me to a stand.

I also have more than one frame.  I have a blue and stainless frame set-up as a rifles and a third blue frame set-up as a pistol.  After the first of the year I will order another stainless frame and set it up as a pistol.
As with my Contenders I don't have a one to one barrel/frame combination.  I currently have three frames and 18 barrels.  I'll most likely add a G2 frame also after the first of the year.

Just my way of doing things. :?

I just got too lazy switching all the time and just bought more frames. In fact' I have  3 frames sitting in my safe waiting for a barrel to drop off of Santa's sled, or when I win the lottery, or when my rich uncle Harvey passes away, or.......

It seems like you guys have a lot of frames.  I've got a question about the prices.

What is the average going price for a used stainless verses a blued Contender frame (not G2)?  This is with no grips or forends.  I’m getting a stainless and was wondering what each goes for.

Thanks,

I have two Contender frames, one blue and the other Armour Alloy.  After deer season the blue one will be set up as a Carbine.  For deer hunting I leave both set up as pistols.

Used frames should go for $200-225.  I've seen some go a bit less.

Used to have a bunch of frames too. Now I only have one. Just too easy to switch barrels (only do pistol in the contender at the moment). I just carry an extra barrel if I think conditions might warrant a different caliber. Kinda the whole point of the Contender concept in my opinion, other than that you're spending about the same for a factory frame and barrel as you would for a same quality bolt gun or single action revolver.

I played the "frame game" too, and until just after the 2000 SHOT Show had 20 Contender and 5 Encore frames.   I want the barrel locking bolts matched to the frame the barrel will be shot on, and so set up groups of "like" barrels for each frame.

Dumped the Encores completely, and nearly 90 factory Contender barrels - so also cut back on the frames.   Only have 5 EO frames now, and they handle all my custom wildcat barrels just fine - again dedicated in groups of barrels per frame.
