Question about the "Sullivan's Trap Tension Tester"
« on: December 05, 2010, 04:14:43 AM »
Greetings Folks,

I have recently bought the "Sullivan's Trap Tension Tester" and I have a question about this tool. I understand how this works but how much pressure do I set the traps at for mink, muskrat, coon, beaver, fox, coyote...ect? I dont want to get animals caught in my traps that I'm not targeting. Can anyone help me out with this please?

No poundage for rats and mink, pan should drop of its own weight.  Yotes , i use 3# tension and  you will still catch all the fox, skunk and coons that visit your sets..LOL!  Beaver i  dont use much more than 2# as i want rats but like was said, once you know the feel of a traps pan tension you can do it by hand..  I used plastic pop bottles with various weights  for differant animals to  familiarize myself with tension feel and after learning, havent looked back and do by feel with experience which will come to you after some  trap adjusting and of course trapping seasons.   Good Luck

I never used one.I used my thumbs.I would set the tension "pretty stiff" on my canine traps as we getting Swift Foxes in my areas. They were protected so I jacked up the pan tension to avoid them.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!
