223 superlight
« on: November 18, 2010, 02:11:27 PM »
For those of you who have the superlight 223 what is your overall thoughts?  I know that they aren't made for shooting tiny little groups, but are you satisfied or do you like the regular sized 223 better.  I like the looks of the size and weight of them and would appreciate any thoughts about them.

Not a bad little weapon. I got one a couple of years ago as a fun gun and want to do some cast bullet develpment on the .223 for small game and would use the Nosler 60grn partition for deer. Jury is still out on that though. People up here in Vt. let there kids use them as a first gun for deer and for 'chucks. Have heard positive things about .223 performance with the partition slug. Accuracy is surprisingly good. As good as most .22 and a wider range of application with handloading. I have a G-2 with a 23" Bbl. in .223 and the firing pin strike would not always ignite the heavier primers in the xm193 rounds but the H&R would always go bang. With a set of firesites or possibly a red dot would work in the shadows for squirrels and such with a flatpoint cast bullet at moderate to low velocities. Want to duplicate .22lr performance and still be able to step up to jkt. bullets if desired. Would make a fairly decent camp gun and survival round for most situations up here. Not recommending it for big game but if you had no other choice I suppose approaching a hunting situation as if you were handgun or bow hunting would work ok IF you placed your shot carefully. Also economical on pwder and projectiles are a little cheaper than most. It breaks down for packing and light weight for what you can do with it. Dirt simple and reliable. Can't ask for more than that except maybe a purty little redhead to carry it for you.  ::)

I had one long before I discovered GBO the thing would shoot minute of barn door 4-5 inch groups at 100 yards. I sold it. Kinda wish I had it back to try some of the tricks in the FAQs to see if would shoot better. I just bought a stainless steel 223 from a member here on GBO put different glass on it and have started the sight in process with win white box 55gr fmj to start it seems to be a shooter.

I've got a couple Superlights, a 6x45 which is a 6mm223, and a 260 Rem the was a 243Win, both rebores, they shoot nice groups as long as the barrel stays cool, that's 2 or 3 shots, if you don't mind two shot groups under ½", you'll be happy, the third shot may not be in the group tho without forend work.  ;)

I got a light weight 223 That shot great but had it made into a 25-35 win
It shot as good as my 24" bull barrel 223.

I had a 243 superlight and sold it because it didn't shoot as well as I liked. I'd like to find a 223 or 22 Hornet superlight barrel though. Especially the Hornet.

I had a 24" Ultra Bull Barrel that I sold and purchased a Superlight 20" on the classified here. I like it better. It is easier to carry, great for the grand youngin's to shoot and kinda matches the weight of my three slim profile 30-30 toppers. It will shoot three accurate shots in short order. It actually shoots better than I do at this stage of life. I don't miss my other .223 barrel. Winchester White Box ammo works well, and I handload 55 grain Hornady Soft Points, that don't shoot quite as well.

I purchased a like NIB Tasco World Class 1.75-5x20mm scope here on the forums that really works well with this barrel.
