Hello all! I am new to this forum and would like to thank everyone in advance for any suggestions you might have.
My husband and I just bought property in the heart of Michigan's Manistee National Forest. We spend our weekends there camping in a travel trailer with our 2 English Setters.
This past weekend our 4 year old Setter treed quite a large porcupine. Since we have found pulling quills out of the dogs mouth with pliers to be a less than satisfying experience, we put the dogs up and my husband shot the porcupine (several times, I might add). We ended up with a dead porcupine weighing in at around 40 pounds or so. We disposed of the critter so the dogs would not find it at a later date.
Being avid hunters and outdoors persons, we felt it an injustice to dispose of perfectly good meat. However, we had no clue as to how to clean or prepare porcupine. I did a search online for porcupine recipes and ended up with about 100 recipes for porcupine meatballs (unfortunately no porcupine meat is required).
If anyone has any recipes for me I would really appreciate it. Judging by all the hollowed tree trunks on our property, I think porkie hunting is going to become a way of life!
Thanks,
Joan
