357 Max
« on: November 13, 2010, 03:53:43 AM »
I have a new to me 357 max 10 inch Contender barrel. I am going to use H110 powder and will be hunting small to med size deer. I was thinking about XTP 158 grainers at about 2000FPS. My question is how fast can you guys push 180gr either cast or jacketed bullets out of a 10 inch barrel?

The load I'm using right now, which is a max load in my 10" Contender, is 23.2 of 296, CCI 400 primers, Rem. brass and 180 XTP crimped in the rear grove for a COL of 2.015. 5 shot average is 1920 fps. Same load from my 24" TC rifle is 2140 fps.

The 180 XTP is a real deer killer. I use it in a 10" 357 MAG with 13.5 grs H-110 for right at 1400 fps and have killed deer out to 107 yards so far and it does a good job. With the XTP bullets you don't have to worry about expansion they will expand but I would opt for the heaver 180 for better penetration.

If you must use a 158, try the excellent 158XTP FP bullet!!  Its rated for 1800+ fps.

Better yet just shoot the Hornady 180SSP.

I urge you to use a 180 in the .357 Max.

I second the motion for 180's in the Max.  Either of the two Hornadys or the 180Rem HP also performs very well.  AA1680 or Lil'Gun, both with CCI 450 primers. ;D

Care to share your lil-gun load.  That is a favorite powder of mine for 357 mag and 22 hornet, and I just got a 357 max barrel.

Thanks,
D
