which barrel - 30/30 or 44 mag
« on: November 01, 2010, 06:25:28 PM »
hello;

need input for a new barrel, 30/30 or .44mag.  which do you suggest???

reload for both and cast bullets for both.  hunting ranges could be from 25 yards to 150-175 yards-ish.  average range 75 yards.

thanks.

A 30-30 Handi is just about perfect. ;D ;)
I've got both and they both work well but the 30-30 gets my vote.

My only concern would be the 30 cal cast bullets. Most I have seen are RN or semi spitzer and even a FN hard cast may not be a good hunting bullet at least not for big game.

Most DG bullets are RN for rifle and HC for pistols. Hard to beat a 30-30 but truth is you will probably over time end up with both

Since you reload for both, I'd get both.  As S.E.Ak says, you'll probably get both sooner or later.  I have both.  My .44 grew into a .445.

If you are planning on using this out to 175 yards then I would get the 30-30. The 44 will kill just as good but at that range the 30-30 will be alot easier to hit your target. A well placed bullet wins every time.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Check out the .308 bullets this guy is molding.  Hollow points that are checked and realllly nasty looking.  ;)  I'm really looking at his mold to try out for my 7.5x55 swiss. ;)  Shouldn't be too explosive with a 15-18 bhn alloy or maybe a 20.  Might be too stiff at 20 to expand well though.

Wahh.  >:(  Unfortunately, it appears the HP version is discontinued.  I suppose the 311291 mold could be adapted to use a hollowpointer as it appears the style is similar.  Will have to ask Lyman if they will offer this as an optional HP.  8(

30-30, no question.  The 30-30 is a more powerful round than the 44 mag, though most people (those on this forum excepted) don't know that.

tirty tirty hands down.....(personally I've never liked the 44 in a rifle), but ballistically the 30 still wins.....
