Go for it, what else do ya need?
I still have my old Weaver K4, it'll take 30-06 loads with out a hitch.

IMO a fixed power is the best way to start a young shooter, it stops'm from wanting to mess with the "cool" vari power all the time and consentrate on the all important shooting technique instead.
It's what I did with my boy till he was a decent shot, then moved up too the 3x9. Besides the up-grade scope was a good Birthday gift,, "Here, I got ya a better scope"  ;D
Couple years after that it's another up-grade too higher end fine optics,,He LIKES what he has now, it's not taken for granted.

For most practical hunting distances a fixed 4 is about all you need.
Most have a nice large front lense which will gather a good amount of light. also you will have a good feild of view.
Most are a pretty inexpensive, but can be a bit hard to find, as it seem 3-9 is the most common.

Another plus is with a fixed 4, he wont be tempted to mess around with it, it really stinks when you have a scope at full power and the deer gets up at your feet, ask me how I know!  ;)

also, less moving parts = more durable (quality of scope is of course a factor).

I started with iron sights on my rem 700 .270, then a red dot, then a 3-9.  They shoot fast and flat so if you find the point blank range for the load he is using, all he should have to do is put the cross hairs on the deer from X yds to X yds, and make sure he stays within that range.

Good luck

Dave

I like a good 4x for my woods guns. I've got an old Weaver 4x on my 7.62x39 and I've got a 4x Simmons on my 32-20 Handi.
Even with my 3-9 scopes they're set on 4 most of the time.

I don't mind a 4x but the two I have have a fine hair reticle, I hate them in the woods. If it were me I would look for a thick to thin Duplex reticle, but thats just me.
The person I got my -06 bolt from used a 4x for 20 years on it. Even for antelope.... ( I couldn't do that) So it would be a good way to start and if they know nothing different they won't get confused or complain since it is the only thing they know.
Good luck,  thejanitor

For the job a straight 4X does, I still love the older Weaver K4's. Standard crosshair is thick enough to see in questionable light or background, thin enough to take a prairie rat at a couple hundred yards.
Lately, now that the Weaver's have gotten scarce, I've started picking up used Leupold and older Redfields in straight 4 and 6X.
Variables have their place, but the 4X works really well, and did for me for years, AND, we ALL religiously use binoculars or a spotting scope to judge racks or estimate range, right?????  Almost NOTHING I hate seeing in the boondocks more than someone sizing ME up in their rifle scope!
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

Fixed power scope....nearly indestructible....at reasonable distance all anyone needs.  Great choice for a young one.....

I find it easier to shoot a 4x accurately as opposed to a variable.  Like Gump said...'One less thing'.
