Handi 30-30 delivers again
« on: October 30, 2010, 02:06:09 PM »
Our camp "problem" with overabundance of does has been addressed once again by my "cheap little single shot".    All the boys with their fancy magnum bolt guns got skunked.    My Handi delivered a nice doe this morning.   Only down side is my wife wasn't here this weekend to fry up the tenderloins.     Oh well I will take them to her and dine at home.   This is one accurate rifle!
Doe came out at about  70 yds and stood broad side.   Sights on the shoulder at bang, lunge, flop.  the Winchester 150 grain took out the heart, jellied the lungs and near shoulder.

Need to get you down here Richard if'n you can stand 2 more hours on the road!

Congrats on the doe, but the word cheap doesn't fit the Handi, it's "inexpensive". LOL!!

Don't you just love when that happens! I got a nice buck a few years back with my 45/70. Two guys with the latest WSMs that looked like they just stepped out of Cabelas were nice enough to help me drag it out since they got skunked.

Yup.  Taking deer is what those simple .30-30 handi-rifles do.  I sat with a youngster in September when he took his first deer...with my youth stocked .30-30 handi.  After the special Youth Hunt was over, a friend borrowed the same gun for his grandson to use during the regular gun/deer season (Nov. 15).  If that young man gets the chance, the rifle is likely to repeat its usual behavior.  ('Cept mine's using 150 gr. Rem. Corelokts rather than the Winchesters).  Talk about a no-nonsense, dependable tool.

Shoot!  You ain't that far away!   :D

We got does everywhere also.  198 pictures on my trail camara between Friday week and last Saturday and all does and fawns except for one 6 pt... and all at night!   ::)  I didn't see anything this weekend except for a coyote, which I promptly shot!   ;D

I shot mine with a 336 last year. I just told a guy about it and he looked at me like I just stepped off of Mars.  A 30-30? Lever action? I told him a 30-30 is like a hammer. When you want to drive a nail, nothing else will do.  When you want to kill a deer you can shoot it with the latest wonder magnum, it just isn't necessary.  I just got my hands on a 158 Topper in 30-30 and am in the process of working up pointy bullet loads for it. Fun, fun, fun!
