Sheath WTB
« on: November 30, 2010, 02:17:08 PM »
I have a new knife, a SOG Pentagon.
I hate the sheath.
Years ago I saw a Chris Reeves Avator knife in a sheath that looked more like a #7 bianchi holster with out the thumb latch.
I think one of these would be perfect for what I want.
Do any of you guys that make custom knives make sheaths?
Would you like to make a custom sheath for me?
Thanks,
McDuck.

Heck, I'd do it for ya Woody!   But by the time I got to it you'ld have probably sharpened the blade down to a nub...  :-[

I just got a bunch of stuff from Tandy including 2 bellys of leather.  You can also!   ;D   Why don't you try your own hand at it?   ;)

BTW, whasa #7 bianchi holster look like?  Never mind, I'll look it up!   :D   Hummmm,  :-\  That's kinda strange for a knife sheath... I'd better look up ol' Steve's knife and see what you mean.

McDuck, any saddle shop or holster maker can make your sheath. Also some knife makers will sell their sheaths separate. Try Randall or Ruana.

Altlaw,
I know what I want and looked at the Tandy site to see what it would take to make the holster/ sheath and I think the cart hit $275.
At that point I figured I could pay some one far less that is talented to make what I want.
Also my artsy side is more fartsy.  I can sand, stain and varnish great, but cutting a strait line is not me and forget about cutting three peices of leather the same shape and then aligning the holes and sewing it together.
A man has to know his limatations and leather work is mine.
Here is a simple example of a #7 holster, this one for my Sig P230.  but you get the general idea.
My thinking is I can wear it on my right side for normal days and then spin on the left if i am carrying a pistol.

I looked up the sheath some more and one of the ones I saw with the knife looked like it was made from that plastic like stuff that is used in a lot of tactical knife sheaths.  Kydell or kydex or sumpin like that...  :-\  Anyway, while designing a sheath for a fighting knife project I ran across the material.  Then I found some pretty good vidios on U Tube showing a guy making a sheath from the stuff.  It's a lot easier and faster then working with leather!  Cheaper to!   :D  I'm sure you could find the vidio on U Tube with a little searching.   :-\

While the knife is a tactical knife I really just want it as a hunting knife.
I like the smooth blade for most hunting chores- you know lopping a section of salami or cheese for lunch or snack
Smearing peanut butter, cutting a hank of rope to make multiple smaller ropes to pull the critter, making a tent steak, what ever.  I like the seratted blade for gutting.  Gets through the chest bones easier.
the blade is 5" a little longer than I want but will work.  Also helping ot gut an few elk last month I think I want a little longer blade than my currrent 3" knife.
My thinking is the leather will be quiet and last a while.
Kydex would be cool and SOG offers a kydex sheath for the knife for only $25.
But I want leather.
The sheath it is in now would be great if I were jumping from an airplane to hunt.  It has a snap and velcro about 30 connection points for all kinds of way to attach or carry it.  Some how non seem appealing to me.
Someone E-mailed me and said they make sheaths and I think I am going to go with him.  the down side is sending him the knife.  Last time I handed someone a knife to have a sheath made I didn't get either the knife, the sheath or my $ back,  And he was a friend.

It originally came with a leather sheath but it was smallish with only a clip, no loop. More of a boot knife thing...

It's not mine. I stole the pic from somewhere.
