To rechamber or not to rechamber ?That is the question
« on: November 04, 2010, 05:01:01 PM »
Well, here goes....I am the proud owner of a T.C. Super 14 barrel  in .30 Herret and am not having very good luck with it....it was a "don't need it-gotta have it" type buy it now deal.... And the JDJ bug has bitten again. Should I have JD rechamber this baby to get something I really want ? or leave it be and do the "wait it out for the $$ thing "  ?     I can't group the Herrett nor do I really enjoy the arduous task of making the brass for the herrett, appears the .309 stuff is straight forward to make.

I appreciate the kind words of advise listed prior on the .309 so...Lemme know what you all think. Shane

You could always sell the Herret bbl and wait for a JDJ to come up for sale in the classifieds. They do come up from time to time, but you have to be quick when you see one!

Already having the donor barrel that you don't use would make the rechamber deal much cheaper.  Of course you're not garanteed the gilt edge accuracy that a SSK barrel would have, but I think the chances of having a good shooter would still be in your favor.  I have two SSK barrels, a 6.5 and a .309 that are both lazers and I stumbled accross both on the used market, but, I was extremly lucky.  I've been watching for a similiar deal on a 375JDJ ever since with no luck and that was 20+ years ago.  In your situation, I think I would go for the rechamber, but, I would have SSK do the rechamber.  As you probably already know, they are the only ones who can give you a true 309JDJ.
     FWIW I've gotten a S-14 375Win barrel that I'm seriously considering rechambering to 375JDJ.

Walt, JD won't do it. He says that it won't clean up properly. Check the measurements in your loading manuals and you will see why(in the neck area).  Pat
