Help me choose
« on: October 19, 2010, 06:38:23 AM »
I am planning on getting my first h&r, I was thinking of the new handigrip handi. Any input on these? And what would you get for a varmint caliber? Thanks

Do you handload, if not, .223. What do you classify as varmints, and what range do you plan on shooting?

Mostly wooded where I hunt, with a few fields. So most shots would be under 150 yds with the occasional longer shot. Would be mostly used for coyotes with a couple foxes in the mix. No reloading here either thanx

.223 all the way. 40-62 grain loads available. I have said it before, but the Fiocchi V-Max is cheap, under $10 per 20 and the most accurate .223 ammo, I have ever used in both of my .223's. Zero 1" high for your range of shots, and hold dead center for anything you shoot.

Only one way to decide on the stock.  Get your hands on one and see.  Personally, I'd rather have a stock whittled out of a crosstie by a blind beggar than a handi-grip, but that's just me.  I also don't like the survivor stocks.  Somehow, they just don't fit me at all.  The wood stocks fit me well, but the new synthetics are my favorites.  Go to a Dick's Sporting Goods, or somewhere that has a few Handi's, and try em on.  And hey, if you don't like what you wind up with, you can always sell or trade here on GBO for what you want to try next.  Only takes about 5 min to change the set out, and about all the cash you can lose in the deal is shipping.

+1 on trying one first

I have found the grip on the Handi grip stock to be a little on the long side. I don't have long fingers and I find the trigger hitting past the last joint on my index finger. You may find it different, but it's something you want to try, as suggested above.

Thanks, Dinny

Im a lefty and the handi grip seems to fit either right or left handers well.  I have one on a short .357 mag carbine and love it.  I generally like wood stocks better but if black plastic doesnt bother you, Go for it !  I like the trigger control I have with that feel of grip.    Jed

I didn't think I'd like the Handi-Grip either, but like many others that felt the same way before they actually had one, it's not bad at all, I like mine, fits me good, handles great and is light to carry. The Handi-Grip is modeled after the extremely popular Remington Shurshot stock, has a nice soft recoil pad, here's Mac's review.
