New to me, H&R combo
« on: October 20, 2010, 08:36:16 AM »
Greetings all,

Yesterday I ate lunch with a old friend that is always trading guns but is currently in a selling mode to raise some cash for a much needed surgery. He mentioned that he wanted to sell a 2 barrel set h&r, 30-30,20ga.
I looked it over and it's a Topper model 158. Has case color receiver and wood stock. Dose not look like it's ever been fired. The stock does have a few rub marks but the metals in real great condition.

Anyone know exactly what I have? He wanted $200 for it so I bought it.

Regards, and thanks for the help.

You want a full refund??????????? I won't even charge a restocking fee!!!!

I love my 158 30-30 and 22 Hornet. Wish I had 20 gauge barrels for both!!!!

So when was this model made? It has a little button on the right side by the hammer that opens the action. No safety that I can see.

There's a serial number prefix list in the FAQs sticky that will tell you when it was made,  the M158 was made prior to 1987 by H&R Inc that went out of business in 1986. They're fine firearms with slim barrels and light frames, but H&R 1871 won't work on them or fit barrels.

Wow, I sold a combo like that in Ketchikan back in 1995 or so.  I wonder if it's the same one?  I kicked myself afterwards for selling it.  I had bought it in 1982 for $130, and put a Williams WGRS peep sight on it and a T-C Hawken blade front sight.  If it is the one I had, I ran probably 500 rounds through it over the years; it was just plain fun to shoot.  It was very sensitive as to load.  But once I had the right load worked up, it was very consistent.

Well winter, it could be it lost it's rear sight, has a weaver base,  and the front sight is different but the case colors are vivid and the recoil shield shows no wear. Dosent look like it's been fired much at all. So it's probably not yours. The guy I got it from lives in anchorage but his work takes him all over the state.

I'll ask him where he got it next time I see him.

Take care,

If you get tired of it, I'll swap you a brand new NEF .30-30 for it!   ;D  Then you could get other barrels....
