The Shooting String
« on: December 16, 2003, 05:54:40 PM »
My dad has been hunting with an Old Model Ruger SBH .44 mag for years.  I've only been toting my Ruger SRH 44. mag for the last few seasons.  He came up with this idea that I thought was pretty cool to help steady your piece for off-hand (unsupported) shots.  Just wanted to throw it out there for y'all.

He cut a piece of nylon rope and tied a knot in it so that it formed a large loop.  He stuck his right arm through the loop and flipped it over his head so that it was across his chest and back (visualize a bandolier).  Taking the rope and placing the grip of the pistol inside the loop you push the gun out against the string.  This makes for an almost rock steady mount.  Sorta like using your rifle sling to tighten things up off-hand.  Of course the length of the rope depends on your girth and arm length.

I totally forgot about this idea for this year's gun season.  I did mangage to bag a button buck but used my knee in a sitting postion to shoot.  Worked well, just have to make up my rope so I'm more prepared to shoot off-hand next time out.

Yep, there used to be a place on the butt of pistol grips just for a lanyard to clip on to.
Hey, hold my beer and watch this.
