Pros and cons of Nosler Partion vs Acubond on elk
« on: September 16, 2010, 08:12:46 PM »
The title pretty much says it. I'm going to try my hand at hunting elk next month and I'm wondering what the pros and cons of these two bullets are. I'm considering the Nolser Partions and the Acubonds both in 200gr in 8mm Mauser. What are the reasons to choose one over the other?

They are both very good bullets. I would try them both out and carry the load that is the most accurate in your gun.

The Acc. behaves very much like the Partition when it hits game, but with the ballistic advantages of the BT. I have only been able to recover 1 bullet so far out of 8 Big Game animals. Little brother borrowed my 300 to take an Elk, the terminal results were great & the bullet busted the off-sie shoulder & kept trucking.

It depends on how far away you are going to be shooting at an elk. The Accubond has a better ballistic coefficient than the partition. Load that bullet up to it's potential 2500 fps or so don't use the low pressure load data. I have a RELOADER magazine someplace where a guy did a big load testing on the 8MM Mauser in a Rem 700 rifle. He decided to use the 200 Accubond but was using it for deer. I can't remember the powder and charge. Let me know if you are interested and I may get time to find the magazine and let you know.

I dont know what Ill get in my rifle but Nosler lists some loads in the manual (they dont list that one on the web) that has a 200gr pushing close to 2700fps.

For elk at any reasonable distance for the 8 mm Mauser I can't think you can do any better than Nosler Partitions.  I have a friend who is a "high end custom gunmaker" who uses a 338-06 for everything from chamois to trophy elk.  His bullet choice is Nosler Partition for all of it.

My favorite is the Partition, but my advice to you is 'flip a coin'.

You could do that & come out fine, the terminal performance will be near identical, esp. at the 8mm velocities.

What happens after the bullet impacts the animal is the most important, since those results will be fine with either, that leaves the performance before impact. I would merely see which one your rifle likes & then hunt with confidence.

200NP's work so well in my 8x57, i haven't taken the time to bother with accubonds...  I like the way the nose is so soft for smaller animals, and the way the rest of the bullet from the partition back, stays together for deep penetration on bigger animals.

+1 on the do it all partition.  Of late I'm shooting accubonds in almost everything ... I practice with BTs till a few weeks before a hunt and then switch to ABs.  Same POI and as far as I can tell (shot 3-4 animals with them) there's not much difference btw the ABs and Part.
